Thanks for the info.  I've had a little look (during my lunch half an hour!!) - it's just the sort of thing I was looking for.  I plan to have a longer look tonight at home. I think that researching where your ancestors is from is an important part of genealogy - then it becomes more personal and not just a list of names and dates of "hatches, matches & despatches"!

I checked the 1861 census for East Dean for the family who could possibly belong to your William Tingle. I found only George Tingle, still a coal miner and living in lodgings.

On the 1881 census I found Thomas Tingle, also still a coal miner, living in Yorkshire. He gives his place of birth as Cinderford ( Forest of Dean)
 
I found Diana Tingle on the 1881 census, married name Smith, still living in East Dean and gives her place of birth as Cinderford which is why I couldn't find them in Little Dean on the 1841. I don't have the 1841 for Cinderford.

Isaac Tingle does not appear on the census.

As the children were without their parents on the 1851 census I checked FreeBMD and found a death for Hannah Tingle in 1838 and William Tingle in 1850.

As you know where William was at the time of the 1861 census I think you should post on the Staffs board and try to get a lookup. Hopefully, this time he will give his place of birth as Cinderford, not just Forest of Dean, and provide the evidence that links him to this family.

I should have mentioned that your William is the only match on the 1881 for the Cinderford family.

The Tingles, in East Dean, are all miners. I found a Joseph Tingle who was the manager at the pit!

Your William is a coal merchant in Staffs. I believe he belongs to the Cinderford family.

I have just come back from the FoD.  And whilst looking around the cemeteries, there are a lot of Tingles there.  Well worth a visit to the Forest as I think you could probably get a lot of information.

In 1841 there are 2 William Tingles - one aged 13 on Turners farm, Ruarden, Mother Maria and sister Mary aged 11
 the other aged  12 father Thomas Tingle,40  mother Susannah, 33 siblings mary 14 george 10 Anne 6 and Tom 4. They were at Upper Bilston, Forest of Dean. father was an engineer
