FOREST OF DEAN
« on: Tuesday 15 February 05 19:12 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I've recently traced one of my ancestors back to Gloucester, namely, William TINGLE born c1828, Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire (info from the 1871 census).  Can anyone give me some information about this area.
Would anyone know how I would go about trying to find out exactly where he was born.   I would like to post a request for an 1841 lookup but realise it would be like looking for a needle in a haystack without this information.
Cheers

Jax,

if you are sure that William was born in The Forest of Dean then the IGI entry which I mentioned on your other thread is a real possibilty. It's the only entry for around 1828.

                               William Tingle

Christening   4th May 1828    Little Dean  Gloucestershire

           Father  William Tingle

           Mother  Hannah

I hope I didn't confuse you asking you to look at Staffs.

Jax,

here are the siblings of the above William. Any of these names ring a bell?

Thomas Tingle 1825
Diana Tingle 1831
Isaac Tingle 1833
George Tingle 1835

All Christened at Little Dean Glos. Unfortunately all born before registration.

If you go here:

http://www.rootsweb.com/~cotswold/GLSontheweb.htm

you'll find lots of Tingles in EastDean51

There is also a William Tingle 23 in Kingsholm51, allegedly born in Gloucester City with a wife.

what does the "51" mean after the place names?

Most of the entries in the index are for 1851 census but there are some entries (a few) for other censuses.

Jax, :)

I checked Little Dean on the 1841 in the hope of finding the William Tingle who appears on the IGI for May 1828.

Unfortunately there are no Tingles at all in the area.

Jax,
I am not quite sure where we are going with this ;D ;D but, for what it's worth, I have found the Tingle family from the IGI in East Dean in 1851.

MATTHEWS William Lodger Widow/er 44 East Dean
William Lodger 14 Short Standing
TINGLE Dinah  Servant 20 East Dean

TINGLE Thomas 45 unmarried Coal Miner East Dean
William 23 Coal Miner Brother East Dean
Geo Brother 15 Coal Miner East Dean
BENNETT Benjamin Visitor 22 Farmers son East Dean
ROLAND Mary Visitor Married 25 Dressmaker Derbyshire Peters

The age for Thomas has to be wrongly transcribed - he has aged 20 years! - Diana has become Dinah.

Nothing is proved yet - but - I am going to search East Dean on the 1861. If I find this William we will know he is not yours  - cos your William is in Staffs then!

I'll be back!

Hi Jax,

I noticed that your first question got overlooked --

(mention a name or date here on RootsChat, and everybody gets on the trail : who ? where ?)

-- but you were also asking for info. about the Forest of Dean.

Check out this thread aswell: http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php/topic,15555.msg124160.html#msg124160
where I gave a link to a site with a history of the Forest of Dean

Hope it will be of interest.
Bob
