Goodluck
In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thank-you to everyone for your help.

AMCass was able to find Major in the Scarborough workhouse records... having entered as an "emergency", stayed approx 3 years and left at the age of approx 12 when he had found employment. A big thank-you AMCass!

There seems to have been a family with the surname of Major in the Muston area but, although it could be likely that one of the males in this family is Major's father, it is all pure speculation. Unfortunately, apart from the Parish records that I have looked at (in which no father is listed) I have been unable to find out any more about his parentage. It may be one of those things I never uncover but I would like to say thank-you for helping me.

I was transcribing more workhouse records this week and got to the date that Major Barker was admitted and I found on the next page, another entry for him.  I hadn't noticed it because it had been crossed out and was not easily readable.  I suspect that someone thought that he hadn't been registered and then found out their mistake. However it does have an additional piece of information.  Under the heading 'Cause of seeking relief', it says "Mother cannot keep him".  This probably means that she was financially unable to support herself and her child, there was quite a lot of this happening at the time.  Hope this helps to fill in a bit more background for you.

Thanks AMCass. How sad. I wonder what became of his mother... I haven't been able to find her anywhere. I had thought that she either married or died around this time. I will now go back and look again in the knowledge that she was at least still alive then.
Thank-you.

Hi, it's me again.  I don't know if this is relevant to your reasearch but as you know I am transcribing workhouse records and while doing the discharges last week I came across the following:

Mary Barker from Muston died 22nd June 1843.

I immediately thought of you and when I got home I looked for her name in the admissions but I cannot find it.  I can only assume that either the entries are not complete, that a few people were missed off or maybe she came in on the 22nd June and her admissions was missed.  We will never know.

Thank-you. You are a treasure. I will now look and see if I can find any further records relating to her death.

Thanks for thinking of me!
