Parish records for MUSTON
« on: Saturday 07 March 09 04:35 GMT (UK) »
Firstly, I hope I am posting this is the right spot.. apologies if I am not.

The baptism of my g-g-grandfather, Major BARKER, is registered in the Muston Parish register on 6th September 1829. His mother is listed as Margaret BARKER.

I am wondering whether anyone has access to this register and can tell me whether any other family events are registered or noted e.g baptisms of other children. marriages or deaths recorded. All I know of Major's parents is that his mother was Margaret BARKER.  I have no information at all on his father or other family members.

By 1841 Major was in the Scarborough Workhouse but I am unable to find any family with him.

Any information  at all would be appreciated.
Thanks

Hello RipleyAnne

I would say if only his mother's name is listed on the baptism record, then she was not married when she baptised him.  Have you looked at the parish record? Because sometimes the reputed father's name is sometimes listed. I have come across this.  Maybe his mother had died and that is why he is in the work house.
Cheers

Thank you for the help but the problem is that I live in Australia so am pretty much limited to what I can access on-line.

Do you know if there is some way I could look at this information on-line or have someone look at it for me?

Thanks

Are you living near a family history center? As you can order the film in there and then you can look at the parish records your self.  Not sure what it would cost there to bring in a film there but here in Canada it is about $6.  If you go on the familysearch.org site you can find a list of family history centers near you.

Cheers

I am currently transcribing two volumes of Scarborough Workhouse records and I believe the first volume will cover 1841.  I will have a quick look through when I go on Thursday to see if I can see anyone by the name of Barker who was admited around that time.

The IGI also has the following baptisms of Barkers in Muston:

Mary Barker  22 Sep 1778 d/o Mary Barker
Robert Barker 10 Jun 1781 s/o Mary Barker

Mary Ann Barker 7 Jan 1833 d/o John & Mary Barker

Margaret Ann Barker 19 Jan 1873 d/o Ellen Barker.

Major is a reasonably unusual forename (although I have one - in W Yorks!) so may be connected to the father. I doubt that the PR entry will give any info about the father but I'll take a look tomorrow when I go to the Record Office. It's always possible that she was a widow!

Hi again,

As I thought, the entry in the Muston parish records doesn't give much more information -

baptised Sep 6 1829 Majer, son of Margret Barker, spinster.

At least you know she was single - not widowed!

Hopefully AMCass will come up with something from the Scarborough Workhouse records.
