Ina Millen/Wilson and Port Glasgow Schools
« on: Friday 06 March 09 19:09 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I am hoping someone can help me. I am doing my family history and I'm concentrating on my grandmother at the moment. Her name was Williamina (Ina) Millen (became Wilson after marriage). She was born in 1920 in Greenock. Sadly she died when she was 24 but I am desperately trying to find a photograph of her of which sadly none seem to exist.

I had a brainwave of there maybe being existing records and class photos at the school she attended. She lived at 35 Ardgowan Street, Greenock when she was growing up and I wondered if anyone would know which school she might have been likely to have gone to?

ANY help or tips at all would be fantastic thanks!

Hi jennifah
it would depend on which religion your grandmother was
this site has some school pictures from greenock
if you google Greenock and district school photographs
it may be worth a look

Thank you for your help Elaine!

I'm certain she was Protestant.  Does that help you narrow it down?

I'll try that search on google too and see what that throws up.........

HI

if you go to the link below you will find all the schools photos.  Its possible she may have went to Ardgowan primary school,  Finnart High or if her family had money, Greenock Academy, which was a fee paying school, although unsure when this scool opened

Hi weemary

What a great site - loads of old class photos on there and even with some of the pupils names! Not found my Gran's name on any though. Thank you  for helping me with possible schools she might have attended, that really narrows it down. I don't think her family were particularly wealthy so I'll concentrate on Ardgowan and Finnart.

Thanks so much :)

Woops I made a mistake and my grandmothers address was 35 Ardgowan Street, PORT GLASGOW! Sorry about that.

I didn't realise there were 2 Ardgowan Streets.

Hi Jennifah

If your grandmother lived in Ardgowan Street Port Glasgow she possibly attended Jean Street or Chapleton Primary Schools and then to Port Glasgow High School

Bye the bye - my grandmother Helen Wilson Ritchie was the 34 year old housekeeper at 35 Ardgowan Street Greenock on 16th June 1914 when she married at Cardross across the Clyde.
[One of the witnesses was an Allan McIntyre who I believe may have been her employer]
