That also fits in with a crime committed by Ebenezer a Walter Turp who I'd been unable to connect. They put tiles in a turnip machine and were sent to prison for 21 days. Ebenezer was 12 or 13 at the time.

.........but for some reason the ancestry.com RG number starts with 10 and no amount of searching will find me that entry on the 1871 census. Where did you get it from?

Sorry, that is 'RG10/1664'.  They are indexed as "Turp" on OriginsNetwork, which uses different indexes to Ancestry.

They are indexed on A*y in 1871 as TAYS, Samuel 51, Ebenezer 19 and Walter 16. The family they are with on A*y is Samuel JAMES.

There are no TIMP births in Essex that coincide with these guys but there are TURP, William Mar qtr 1849, Unnamed Male Mar qtr 1851 and Walter Sep qtr 1853, all Sudbury RD which covers Pentlow. The census image looks like TURP.

So Amelia must have been his second wife. Harriet has died Dec qtr 1864, Sudbury.

In 1851 they are in Pentlow, but indexed on A*y as SHROPE. How you get that from TURP I do not know.

There is a marriage on FreeBMD in Dec qtr 1872 for a Samuel TURP, Chelmsford, 4a 327. There is only one possible bride noted, a Millicent OLIVER. There should be a second one. Chelmsford RD covers Little Waltham, where Amelia was born.

The other Samuel in 1872 on FreeBMD should be William.

Ebezezer TURP married the same quarter Cherlmsford 4a 338. Samuel is with them in Great Leighs in 1891. Ebenezer is called John in 1901. Edith Ellen your great aunt looks like Ebenezer/John and Catherine's daughter.

Many thanks everyone. I have added all your information to my tree. I have looked at the handwritten entries on the censuses and when you know the name should be Turp it is obvious.

Ebeneezer Turp was my great grandfather who was married to Catherine (Millbank) - Edith Ellen born 1892 was Ebeneezer's daughter. 

Have you any more information on the family, we do have Samuel born 1848, he was Eb's dad, we also have a John Turp (Samuel's Dad) born 1806 - all from Pentlow.

I have been researching the Turps for about 3 years with my sister, we have found out many things, but do not have any photos as yet.  I would love to see any you may have.

Edith was the youngest daughter of Ebeneezer and Catherine, Sonny her brother born in 1899 sadly died in action in the first world war - we are attempting to investigate his records.

I think Samuel Turp is my Gt Gt Grandfather.  I will look at what I have found out and e mail you some time next week. Sue B
