Hi Iain

Many thanks for that information - I see no connection to my LINDORES as yet, but I'll keep it for future use.

Yes, there are many spelling variations - you do need to have an open mind and sometimes a vivid imagination!

As for recording the surnames - I stick to LINDORES. If I come across a different spelling on an official record I still use LINDORES, but I make a note such as 'Surname recorded as LINDOORS'.

I'll check my records for your John, Elizabeth and Isabella.

Regards

Helen K

Hello Helen

Georgefield features in my MALLEN family research which is strongly linked to LINDORES.  The John LINDORES and Jane TURNER mentioned below are my family.  My ggfather Alexander MALLEN m. Jane LINDORES, who was d.o. John & Jane above.  my gfather, John Lindores MALLEN, came to South Africa and married here.  Two of his children carry the LINDORES name as middle names - my mother, Jean, and uncle John (Jack).  So far I have not heard of Ladykirk mentioned either. :)

Regards
Marielle

Helen,I have gone through all the pre 1855 M.I. for Berwickshire and have found only 2 LINDORES.
If you use a map for Berwickshire you will be able to see the relationship to Gordon,Berwickshire.

For Iain,

I think I know the father of John Lindores in your message.

While he is not buried with the others, the only information I could find about him was that he lived with a Betsy and had a daughter Isabella, according to the Census records, who was born in Roxburghshire. They were living in Smailholm in 1861 and Gordon in 1851

Betsy had at least 3 children before Isabella, as they are noted as step children in each Census (51 and 61).

I think we have the same family!
