The other angle on this is that maybe Annabel Smith was a niece on Ada Jones (nee rhodes) husband's side. Especially if the comment on here that Mary Ellen Rhodes (adas sister) didnt marry a Smith but George Priestman is true.

but trying to trace a common name like Jones is  really tough.

he is in the 1901 census as living in runcorn with ada , their daugther Norah and edward john smith (the capt of titanic) and sarah his wife were visiting. in the 1891 census in runcorn too.

it states here that he was born in 1854.

I know that Thomas Jones was in the brewerey business as a licensed victuller.

could do with finding his parents and siblings.

There are two Martin daughters listed in 1861 - Rosanna, 11, and Ann, 9.
Ann may be listed as Rhodes in 1871 (she is at the same address as Ada).

I think Rosanna may have married William Ringland in 1867 - they are together in Hanley in 1871 and 1881 - no Annabel(le) there.
Annie Martin may have married Richard Hall (poss in 1873) - they have a son George Rhodes Hall b. Hanley and are together in Stoke-on-Trent in 1881.

There is a 27-year-old Thomas Jones in Runcorn in 1881 living with father Thomas Jones from Wales, his occupation brewer, father's occupation brewer and hotel keeper. There are several sisters.

When was Ada Jones' will written? By that time, might Annabel have been married?

thanks - good stuff. didnt know about william ringland.

have found that 3 Ringlands (May, elsie, Rosa aged 15,13 and11) were living with Nora (nee rhodes) and Thomas Jones in 1891 in Runcorn. So something must have happened to their parents - William and rosanna  Ringland

these are the children of Ada's half sister - more nieces

the will was written in 1936 - when ada was in her eighties. i am assuming smith was annabels married surname. Am hoping her maiden name is Jones and that she is one of Thomas Jones sisters children.

i dont have an ann rhodes on the 1871 census in runcorn -

it is george rhodes, ellen rhodes, mary ellen rhodes, william albert, george (timmie - thnik the timmie bit is a mistake) rhodes, jodiah (should be josiah) rhodes and richard Pollitt who is ellens father.

They weren't in Runcorn - Ada Rhodes and Annie "Rhodes" are in Hanley in 1871 with their aunt, Mary Appleby (49, a widow b. Hanley - George's sister? - there's a possible marriage in 1849 for Mary Rhodes and Joseph Appleby).

ok thanks - i'll look at that.

yes mary was george rhodes sister -

how are you finding out about these marriages? - i can trace the males easily enough though the different census years - but loose the females once they leave the childhood home - unless i happen to have other info that links them.

where is it that you are looking? how did you find she married an appleby for eg and the info youve given above about female marriages?

I use a combination of freebmd.rootsweb.com and looking for women of the right age and birthplace in the census (first-name searches only). You might just have to trace all the various branches forward (Ada and Thomas' siblings children) until you find an Annabel, then see if you can find her marrying a Smith (perhaps some cousin of Captain Smith?)

thanks for this - its ceratinly effective as youve managed to find marriages i didnt know about

still want to bottom mary ellen rhodes marriage (was it george priestman for sure) and if so what children were there and did that child marry a smith

then thomas jones siblings and children - did he have sisters/brothers that had an annabel that married a smith

then capt smiths uncles (as i dont think he had a full brother or sister) did they marry into the Rhodes/jones

then go back to the lots of other half brothers/sisters and other rhodes descendants.

Have you seen this page on Wikipedia?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Edward_Smith

It has his parents info, plus other family names included.
If you read thru the info its also possible to work out where he was at and when from his service history and family info.

ok - still trying to bottom this one. firstly to look at mary ellen rhodes.

Can anyone help me find the decenents, children and grandchilren of Mary ellen Rhodes?

she married George Priestman and was living with him and their children (john, marion, and george rhodes priestman) in 1891 in west derby, lancs. She was born in Wheelock in 1858.

I'd like to establish

1. who her children married.
2. did any of them marry a Smith ( ie into capt smiths family)
3. did she marry twice
4. when did she and her husband george die?

can anyone help?
