Death lookup. Maurice THOMAS.
« on: Thursday 05 March 09 07:57 GMT (UK) »
Hi,
I'm looking for a death of Maurice/Mauris THOMAS.
NOT Mauris THOMAS who died in Molong in 1890.
The one I want is that Mauris's father.
Three brothers THOMAS, Maurice, John & Nicholas, and Maurice's two sons Maurice/Mauris and Charles, arrived in SA, 1848.
They were pioneers in copper smelting at the Bremmer River, SA. Then moved to Newcastle, NSW.
Other family members came to Australia later.
The family were mostly in copper mining so Maurice Snr could have died in the copper districts of SA or in Newcastle or Cobar, NSW, or Peak Downs Qld.
I haven't been able to find him in NSW.
He was born in Illogan, Cornwall, 1804.
His parents were Elizabeth & Maurice.
Any help appreciated, as always.
Leonie.

Thanks Kris.

Hi Leonie,

I admit to getting a bit confused over different spellings etc, but thought there is nothing lost by putting these 2 up as the names seem to be part of your group

At the Southern Pioneer Cemetery

THOMAS, Charles. 24 March 1895 aged 50 years. Mine accident.

THOMAS, Maurice. 28 May 1892 aged 35 years. Mine accident.

Well they sure look like mine Sue. But they don't fit in any of what I have so far.
I do have a few THOMAS's who I haven't put into my Legacy program and of course when they're in emails and in my ring-binders they're not so easy to find.  ::)
There was a whole lot of them went to Chile then back to Cornwall then out here to Australia.
At least three brothers THOMAS and two sons migrated. So that's a posible five families to work with.
I'll make a note of these two deaths (somewhere) and fit them in as I do more research.
Thanks a lot,
Leonie.

Hello again from Barbatalice

I too am looking for information on the death of Mauris/Maurice THOMAS (the father!) or for that matter any information on his movements after he left South Australia.

My only clue so far is that a Mauris THOMAS and a Martha THOMAS were witnesses on a marriage certificate in Melbourne August 31, 1859.

The bride is MaryAnn KIDD (a widow) formerly Mary Ann THOMAS,  the daughter of Mauris/Maurice THOMAS (the father). While the witness could be her brother Mauris it could also be her father.  I have no idea who Martha THOMAS is (a new wife?)

I have read an unsourced document that suggests that Mauris/Maurice THOMAS (the father) went to Melbourne,  had some property dealings there, remarried  and then left Australia altogether.  This would explain why we can't find a record of his death in Australia. Unfortunately I can't verify any of this.

On the topic of witnesses:
On the  marriage certificate of  Annie Thomas KIDD (daughter of Mary Ann THOMAS)  and Robert Watson MILLER, 27 Feb 1872 at Peak Downs, the witnesses are Lonelybones' ancestors Mauris THOMAS (the son) and Susannah Maria THOMAS ( the daughter-in-law).  It all seems to be going around in very complicated circles.

Cheers

Hi Barbatalice,   :D
I have Maurice jnr in Glenelg, SA, 1861, Newcastle, NSW, 1868; Peak Downs, Qld, 1873, then Bourke, NSW, 1875.
Also, Mr Maurice THOMAS was managing the copper smelting department at Peak Downs, 1870.
I can't think the Maurice snr would return to Chile, so the other option would be back to Cornwall.
He isn't on the 1841 or 1851 census. And I can't find a death for him in Cornwall. (I tried 1851 to 1905, all spellings.)
So I guess he must have died somewhere in Australia.  ???

I haven't found a death record for Mauris THOMAS (senior) but I have found a 2nd marriage for him which locates him in Melbourne in 1856

Date and location of marriage : Weslyean House Cottage Melbourne 12 Feb 1856

Bride:
Maryann KYLE
residence Melbourne
spinster
aged 21
born Londonderry Ireland
parents Samuel KYLE (farmer) and Sarah KYLE

Groom: Mauris THOMAS
residence Melbourne
widower (1855)
aged 52
occupation unclear - licensed .......??
children from 1st  marriage 4 living, 5 dead
born Illogan Cornwall
parents Mauris THOMAS (occupation unclear - could be miner) and Elizabeth WILLIAMS

So this is our Mauris THOMAS.  Now to find out what happened to him next!

Cheers
