Devon BABBAGE.
« on: Tuesday 03 March 09 13:39 GMT (UK) »
Is anyone on here researching Babbage families in Devon? I have  John Babbage (my 5x grt grandfather) who I have been trying to find the birth place of. He worked, married, had children and died in Nettlecombe, Somerset but I can't find a baptism for him. He died in 1833 aged 79 which would make his birth approx 1754. Knowing that there were lots of Babbages in Devon, does anyone have a John Babbage that could be him please?

Thanks
Jeanne

Hi Jeanne,

I am researching Babbages in Devon from the Ashreigney area. I have several John Babbages but I have not been able to connect to your John.
My John Babbage born in Ashreigney 1783, the son of John Babbage and Ann  Stephens

Do you have the will for your John Babbage?
I have a copy if you would like it.

Regards
Robyn

Thank you Robyn, I would love a copy of his will please.

My John Babbage is proving to be a bit of a mystery, Im beginning to think he may have been an alien  ;D.

Will you be able to email me the copy. If so shall I pm you my email address?

Thank you for getting in touch.

Hi Jeanne,

Just PM your email address and I will attach the file.
It's good that it has found a home.

Hello, Robyn:

I have an indirect connection to the BABBAGEs of Ashreigney, Devon. John BABBAGE (1783-1868) married Rebecca VODDEN (1788 - ?) of St Giles in the Wood. Rebecca was a descendant of my ggggg-grandfather Michael COOKE. Would you happen to have Rebecca's death or burial?

Regards,

Bill

Welcome to Rootschat Bill,

Rebecca is on the 1851 census, wife of John BABBAGE  of St Giles (in the Torrington registration district) but the 1861 census lists him as a widower.
The only Rebecca BABBAGE death on FreeBMD between 1851 and 1861 in Devon is the Sept quarter 1853, Torrington Vol 5b  page 301.
I don't have this certificate but have assumed it is the correct lady.

I do have paperwork re Rebecca including a copy of the marriage settlement between Rebecca VODDEN and John BABBAGE. A Margaret Cook VODDEN witnessed one document

I will send you a personal message (PM)

Regards
Robyn

I've got Devon Babbage too.

Another 'John Babbage' - a labourer alive in 1839 at the marriage of his 22yr old daughter Mary to Samuel Burnell at Combe Florey, Somerset.

I'm finding it hard though to find relevant Devon records  - that's all i've got. : /

Suggestion via ancestry.co.uk puts the mother as either Rebecca Vodden or Anne Westaway.
