where was Ballyshoneboy?
« on: Monday 02 March 09 15:22 GMT (UK) »
Hello again... I'm hoping someone with local knowledge of co Limerick can help with this one.

I'm trying to locate where a place called Ballyshoneboy was either on an old map of Co Limerick or in relation to a modern map of Co Limerick

Its mention as being one of the electoral districts under the Killmallock Poor Law Union, on the www.workhouse.org.uk  website. But I'm none the wiser in trying to pinpoint its actual location.

I ask because I believe have 2 references of my earliest ancestors coming from there... the 1659 census and another reference in 1689

thanks in advance

Jenny

it may be worth having a search on the townland database at www.thecore.com/seanruad

a few that could look/sound similar :
 Ballyshane, Ballyshanedehey, Ballyshoneen, Ballyshonickbane, Ballyshonikin

Wonder if it's this one:
Ballymacshaneboy- 51 acres- Effin Parish- Kilmallock PLU
Ballymacshaneboy- 706 acres- Kilquane    Parish- Kilmallock PLU
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

I've also been hunting around and the one that stands out as being the most likely, is this one

Ballymacshaneboy- 706 acres- Kilquane    Parish- Kilmallock PLU

its difficult when there are so many places that sound similar and could easily be mispelt.

Thany you shane and aghadowey for your input.  I'll see what else I can find on the place.

Hi there,
You could try looking on the interactive map at the Ordnance Survey of Ireland site,
www.osi.ie
you can pan around, zoom in etc. I haven't looked at the Kilmallock area in great detail, but I did spot Ballymacshaneboy, so could be worth a look in any case , just to familiarise yourself with the area.
Another idea might be to contact someone at Kilmallockonline, and find out if the local post office might know of the name you're searching for.
I imagine Ballyshaneboy might be the name of a farm or small hamlet, a place name rather than a townland.
Good luck!
Mags

P.S,Also have a look at the place names of Ireland site, it's great:
