Huguenots in Gloucestershire?
« on: Monday 02 March 09 13:14 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

My LEONARD ancestors from Wotton-Under-Edge (near Stonehouse) were Weavers, by trade, and were Calvinists by religion.
I was recently told that Stonehouse may have had a Huguenot community at some point... is this true? How do I find out more information about the community?

I know the information I have doesn't prove anything, but I can't help wondering if the Leonards were descended from Huguenots, and i'd like to find out more.

The earliest record I have found, for this branch of my family, is James Leonard marrying Martha Elliott at Dursley in 1789. I believe James's Fathers name may have been Samuel Leonard.

Any help anyone could give me in tracing this line back a little further or any information you have about Huguenots in Stonehouse would be much appreciated. ;D

Thanks

Nathan

Hi Nathan,
I can't help you personally (wish I could), but when I went to London to a family history show I noticed The Huguenot Society of Great Britain and Ireland had a stand there. I've just looked at the show guide, and this is their website.
Hopefully if you can't find the information on the website, sending them an email might help answer your question.
Hope this helps - good luck.
Paulene :)

Nathan,

At http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~hughwallis/IGIBatchNumbers/CountyGloucester_(N-Z).htm#W you will find two batches of names extracted from the Calvinistic Methodist Tabernacle (now an auction room) at Wotton Under Edge.  There are only two Leonards baptized there.

I understand that France Lynch in the parish of Bisley was so named because of Huguenot settlers.

I suppose that nowadays W-U-E is considered close to Stonehouse but when Huguenots arrived  8.4 miles wwould have been considered a fair distance.  See Parloc from http://www.parloc.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk/

Regards

Chas

Not sure if im replying in the right way to but sorry if im not. Are you able to view my family tree on ancestry.co.uk?it is a public tree and it's called 'williams family tree'
As far as I know most of the Flook's were born in Gloucestershire. My great grandad Moses Flook was born in Bitton 1812 bristol .He was a boot maker. Unsure if linked to the Leonards but live in hope i find a link somewhere, regards
Dawn
P.s. am related to Percy pavey Flook south African motorbike racer,if you google him it comes up about his races, pretty sure he was Moses's grandson.
If you would like a formal invite to my tree so u can look at photos, let me know but will need an email address, welcome to reply thro my own email.
