andrew harris - royal field artillery
« on: Sunday 01 March 09 20:31 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have just been given this photo of my great granpa, Andrew Harris, taken in 1917.  I know he was inthe Royal Field Artillery and he was a driver, working with the horses.

I didn't know what the belt accross his front was and wondered if anyone knew.

Also, he was from Glasgow, dad James Campbell Harris and mum Elizabeth Tennant.

Also, he survived the war!

It's an ammunition bandolier...1903 pattern

Each pouch carries 10 rounds in two 5 round clips, 50 rounds in total
One more charge and then be dumb,
When the forts of Folly fall,
May the victors when they come
Find my body near the wall.

Well, the spurs certainly are!! ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

He is actually wearing short ankle boots but with leather leggings / gaiters as per the norm for mounted other ranks (NCOs and privates)

Dear

I am an 18 year old boy from Belgium. I own a metaldetector and i have found a name tag with the name "Andrew Harris" on it. I found military documents with the badge number that tell me this "Andrew" was part off the Royal Field Artillery. Also C.E. was on this dog tag which means Church off England. I got tagged here because the name in your message is the same as the one thta i found. I would like to know where he was active at the time and to see wether or not i found the dog tag of your family member.
I hope to hear from you soon.

Kind regards
Kobe Vanrenterghem

Hi Kobe,

I have contacted a person on Ancestry with Andrew in their Tree with a link to this.

Hopefully they will reply.

How lovely of you to try and return the tag to a family member.

Trish :)
