Hi Chris

You previously mentioned you have the records for Tom Mantell concerning his baptism plus his relatives and any siblings at St Johns Sub Castro, if you could possibly send these to me too that would be great

Regards

Sue

HI Chris, I'm new to the site and am really impressed with the work you are doing. I hope that you might be able to help me find out more about my Lewes roots. I have back tracked to William Simmons who married Jemima Harding at St John's in Lewes, on April 6th 1815, I think that his father was Samuel Simmons and her father was John Harding but I have no other details. Can you help?
Many thanks, Margaret

Hi Margaret

First of all welcome to Rootschat and especially the Sussex Boards - one of the best; and thank you for all those nice compliments.

You just mentioned St John - is that St John Sub Castro or St John the Baptist - both are in Lewes.

I notice that William & Jemima married by license:
Extract from the Sussex Marriage Index:
Archdeaconry of Lewes Marriage Licence,  Date:  6 Apr 1815:
Groom: William SIMMONS, bachelor, 20, with consent of father Samuel of the same parish.
Bride: Jemima HARDING, spinster, 18 S.John Sub Castro
Extra Information: SIMMONS Saml. labr All Saints

Marriage
Location: Lewes St. John sub Castro, East Sussex,  Date:  6 Apr 1815:
Groom: William SIMMONS, with consent of father Samuel.
Bride: Jemima HARDING, with consent of father John, both of this parish

This seems to indicate it is Sub Castro, but there is a mention of All Saints in Lewes

Hi again Margaret

I have just checked the Baptism Registers for St John Sub Castro between 1601 and 1902 and there is not one single entry for the surname Harding.

Checking the same time period for the surname Simmons or variants (with or without a 'd') there are some 40 entries - but not one with the name Samuel and there are no entries to William & Jemima either.

This leads me to suspect that they were not originally from Lewes

Have you any further thoughts on this

Hi Facellia

I spent several years surveying, transcribing, photographing and re-checking the data in St John Sub Castro back in the 1990's - therefore all the info is stored on my computer.

I also transcribed the Baptism Registers as well as the Burial Registers and all the data was fed into an excell document.

So, just tell me what you are looking for and I will post details asap

I also did the same with All Saints in Lewes as well as St John the Baptist in Southover and St Michael in South Malling - all of course in Lewes.

I await you command
