Chris, I would be very grateful if you could help me. My 2xgreat grandmother was CAROLINE PHILLIPS who was baptised at St John Sub Castro in 1824. She married CHARLES STEELE and in 1881 they were living at Abinger Place, Lewes, which is close to the church. Do you have any inscriptions for PHILLIPS or STEELE? My Lewes ancestors also lived on Priory Street, Southover. Do you have any records for St John's, Southover please? Thanks, Ann

Thanks for all this information Chris; I am truly grateful, especially for the photo of my 2xgreat grandparents' gravestone. I couldn't find it when I visited Lewes recently, which was a disappointment after travelling about 200 miles! Your hard work is much appreciated by us Sussex exiles! Thanks again. Ann

Hi Rains4

Happy to be able to help you, and even more pleased that the many hours spent in the churchyard were of some use to others.

To find the stone, upon entering the church yard, follow the foot path down to the bottom of the yard  where it is a bit overgrown - on your extreme left near the edge of the yard you will find your Steele monument.  (there is a track/pathway round the edge of the yard at the bottom that comes within a couple of feet of your monument)

Hello Chris,

Thanks for the directions...next time I visit Lewes I will go and find the stone. I hope you don't mind me asking you something else: do you have any similar records for Southover Church? My mother grew up in that parish, was married there and I believe her parents and at least one grandparent must be buried there. As with St John sub Castro, I couldn't find any readable stones. The surname in this case is BEAUMONT, although there may possibly be STEELE graves too. Thanks. Ann

Hi there Rains4

St John the Baptist Southover - Burial Register Transcription.

Have checked back as far as 1860 for Steele or Beaumont with just 2 results - but no monument identified as yet.

1934 Dec 27th, Anna Maria Beaumont, aged 80 of Southover
1910 Sep 21st, George Beaumont, aged 72 of Southover
