Hi Sean

Memorial No 723 in St John Sub Castro

723-

In memory/
of A.. Mary wife of R Webb/
daughter of .........../
who died Dec the 21st 1786/
aged .../
Also of Ann Webb/
their daughter/
who died/
August 11 1772/
aged 69 years/
Also of Sarah Wilson/
their daughter who died/
May 8 1786 aged ../
Also to the memory of
John Wilson
who died March 11th 1778/
aged 77 years/
As you can see from the transcription of the slab on the grave, there should be anything up to 4 people in this grave - Actually it is a brick lined Vault with only 1 Lead Coffin in it..

I know this because that piece of broken stone in the bottom right hand corner of the vault is easily removed and you can see inside the vault - revealing only 1 lead coffin sitting on some metal brackests, but there are other metal brackets with nothing on them.

Wonder if this was the scene of a Grave Robbers crime in the late 1700's ?

Hi there

I would love to know if my Hubard ancestors are buried here.  I am in Canada and wish I could visit this church.

Also looking for information on William Pettitt b abt 1857 - died in Lewes before Nov 1886

Hi again

The baptism register at St John Sub Castro shows these baptisms between 1846 and 1902 - but unfortunately does not include a William in 1857 (but he could have been baptized elsewhere in Lewes

1863   Dec   13   Pettet   Mary   f   d   George   Mary   OTP   Labourer
1867   Oct   27   Pettit   George   m   s   James   Susannah   OTP   Beerhouse Keeper
1889   Dec   1   Pettit   Annie May   f   d   Albert   Emma   OTP   Packer
1861   Dec   8   Pettitt   John   m   s   George   Mary   OTP   Labourer

Hope that helps
