Orphanage records please, Patrick Flannery
« on: Thursday 26 February 09 01:28 GMT (UK) »
Hi there, I am in need of some help with finding out more information regarding my maternal grandmother's father.  Unfortunately, everyone who may have had this information has passed away and I am not sure where to go from here.  My grandmother (who passed away 22 years ago) wrote this note regarding her father.  This is the most information I have been able to find on him.

"Patrick Flannery was born in India 17 Mar 1863.  His father was in the army in India.  At that time India was a British Colony.  Both of Patrick's parents contracted a disease and died in India.  Patrick was sent back to Grimsby, England, with his 2 brothers and 1 sister to an orphanage.

Patrick Flannery was in the English Army most of his life including the Boer War.  Dishcharged 2 years before death because of ill health.

Florence Edith Rose Cook Flannery worked as a maid for a Lord Michael and he was married to an actress.  Married in 1910, her husband died 4 years after they were married.  She came to Canada 1920 (June) for better living purpose."

I can tell you that he had two children with Florence Cook, my grandmother, Edith Joan Flannery born 7 Sep 1911 and Patrick Flannery born 4 months prior to his death in 1913.  I know that he passed away 12 Mar 1913.

I am looking to find out the following things:

1.  What orphanage he went to
2.  What his siblings names were
3.  What his parents names were

If you have any suggestions on how I can further research his parents that would be most helpful and muchly appreciated.  I am not sure where to start looking for them as I am unsure of where to look, whether it would be with the British Army or within India.

Thank you so much for any help you are able to give me.

Hi tgit_1 Welcome to RootsChat! :)

The age is a couple of years out from what you suggested, but the 1881 census has

Patrick FLANNERY 15 Blacksmith, Bombay India

in the Medway Union Workhouse at Chatham, Kent.

In the same Workhouse was
John FLANNERY 13 Scholar, Bombay India

At 7 St Mary's Terrace, Willesdon was
Julia FLANNERY 17 Dom Servant, India British Subject.
in household of Henry R GOODWIN

1891 census
159 Albion St, Grimsby
John FLANNERY (lodger) 22 Fisherman, India British Subject

There was also a FLANNERY family in Preston Lancs who had some kids born in India.
64 Peel Hall St, Preston
Celia FLANNERY (wid) 39 Dublin
Annie 19 Sewing Machinist, Malta?
Lina 16 Cotton Winder, India (East)
Theresa 13 India (East)
Kate 10 Ireland Tipperary
Agnes 7 Ireland Curragh (I think there was a barracks at Curragh)

and in hospital in Preston
William FLANNERY 11 School, India

Providing you register and login, you can order overseas birth certs online to hopefully get parents' names.  Here is some info https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/faqs-overseas.asp

Have you checked to see if there is a  Military record for Patrick Flannery?  I have found these to be quite informative often giving parents/or 1 parents names and address, or siblings.
sometimes just looking at other records can give you a nudge to the information you seek

Hi there, thanks for the suggestions.  I do know the exact date of death as I do have a copy of his death registration.  It was 12 Mar 1913 and it states his age as being 50 years putting his birth year at 1863.  I too have found this information and searched Military records but I haven't been able to come up with anything that really seems like my ancestor.  It was suggested that I try and find out who his parents were so that I can narrow it down to which Patrick Flannery it would be.  It seems that was a popular name at the time.  I know that he is interred at Nunhead Cemetery in London England if this helps at all.

Here is what I know to be factual:

Birth 17 Mar 1863
Death 12 Mar 1913
Married to Florence Edith Rose Flannery sometime between 1908 & 1911
Had 2 Children - Edith Joan Flannery 11 Sep 1911, Patrick Flannery born in 1913
Interred at Nunhead Cemetery, London, England

Here is what is speculated:

Note found in my late grandmother's things stating he was born in India, his parents died there (in India), him and his brother and sister (no names) were sent back to Grimsby, England to an orphanage and that he served in the Army and was released early due to illness and passed away shortly there after.

Thanks again!

Had a look for Flannery on FIBIS website and came up with 3 baptisms in index: Julia Flannery 1864, Patrick Flannery 1866 and John Flannery 1868. From their ages and 1881 census details found earlier it looks like these could be the same family and might be Patrick and his brother and sister.
The age is a couple of years out from what you suggested, but the 1881 census has
Patrick FLANNERY 15 Blacksmith, Bombay India
in the Medway Union Workhouse at Chatham, Kent.
In the same Workhouse was
John FLANNERY 13 Scholar, Bombay India

At 7 St Mary's Terrace, Willesdon was
Julia FLANNERY 17 Dom Servant, India British Subject.
in household of Henry R GOODWIN

Don't forget that Patrick's age on death certificate might not be accurate as informant might have gotten details wrong.

If Patrick married in England his death marriage certificate should list his father's name and hopefully his former occupation.

Thanks for noticing my mistake Geoff
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Thanks, I too believe this is his brother and sister.  I am still trying to find the marriage information for him.  As far as I know my grandmother's mother was always in England until she immigrated to Canada in 1920, so there should be some record of marriage somewhere...it is just a matter of finding it now.  Thanks again for all the help!

Births Sep 1911
FLANNERY    Edith J    (Cook or Cock)    Marylebone    1a   945
Births Sep 1913
FLANNERY    Patrick J    (Cook)    Thanet    2a   2172

I can't see a FLANNERY/COOK marriage ... but then it need not have been a first marriage for Ms COOK/COCK.

Thanks again, I do have this information, as this is my grandmother and her brother.  I too am puzzled about the marriage and cannot find anything listed.  When they came to Canada, my grandmother's mother remarried in 1922 and it is listed as her 2nd marriage on her marriage certificate (which I do have), so I believe that the Flannery/Cook marriage was her first.  I have been hoping to find the marriage record thinking it would list Patrick's parents names, but I haven't been too lucky with that....yet.

Have you looked at the 1911 census http://www.1911census.co.uk/ ???

There is a Patrick FLANNERY (born India c1864?) and an Edith Florence Rose COOK (born Margate c1885?) both living in the St George (London) district - could that be relevant?  I notice that your gt grandmother emigrated as "Edith" FLANNERY in 1920 (Salvation Army) and also that her daughter was born in the Thanet area which would give a connection to Margate ie. Edith/Florence returning home to relatives when her "husband" died perhaps?
