Birth Look up - Hale, Lancashire
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 22:54 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I don't usually venture to the Lancashire board, I have never had reason to!!!!  Until now.........

A distant relation of mine has provided me with some details of two possible "family members" (he found them listed in the family bible), as follows:

Martha Jane Challinor
Birth Date: 9 Nov 1874
Christening Date: 15 Nov 1875 Hale, Lancashire, England
Father: Richard Challinor
Mother: Jane

Charles Frederick Challinor
Birth Date: 12 May 1876
Christening Date: 24 Dec 1876 Hale, Lancashire, England
Father: Richard Challinor
Mother: Jane

There were many variations of the Challinor name - Challiner/Challenor/Challoner

I would like to find out the mother's maiden name, which would definitely confirm that these two are indeed mine.  I know that I could purchase the birth certificates but I'm just trying to save myself £14!!  What I find odd is that my Richard and Jane Challinor had all their children in Newtown, Montgomeryshire but I have no idea about a Lancashire connection.  Interestingly, I have found their deaths in Newtown in 1880, but of course I want to be sure.

If anyone can help me I would be most grateful.

Thank you very much,
Jan

Hi Jan,

I realise that this is no help at all in finding the mother's maiden name, and forgive me if you already have these details, but a search on freebmd gives Martha Jane CHALLIONER registered in the district of Birkenhead, Cheshire Dec 1874.  A search for Martha Jane on the Cheshirefmd site has the same spelling of the surname, sub district of Birkenhead registers at Wirral.  I cannot find anything for Charles Frederick on either website.

Hi Maggie

Thank you for your reply :)

Mmmmm that's interesting.  I think I need to get back to my rellie to confirm the details again, as it would seem that although Martha and Charles were christened in Hale, they were not born there.  The mystery deepens.

Whilst typing this I had another look on FreeBMD and have found Charles' birth, registered June Q 1876, district Prescot, Lancashire which covers Hale.  Registers now divided between St. Helens, Knowsley, Liverpool and Halton districts.

Do you know if christening records from the 1870's showed the mother's maiden name?

I would say that it seems to be the luck of the draw.... more often than not the mother's maiden name is not mentioned, but occasionally it is.  Having said that, most of my own christening records are earlier than 1870.

This is a long way from Shrewsbury isn`t it ???...lol
google Withins Way and you`ll find there was a ferry from Hale (withins way) to the other side of the Mersey...Birkenhead/seacombe/ etc...don`t know when this ferry stopped but Hale Village is a beautiful village and could well have been convenient for the church if it was only "across the river"...I moved here to Hale on 1st November...I am going for a pint now...I`ll see if there`s any Challinors on the War Memorial....allan
added...NO Challinors on War Memorial...bit cold today..I`ll have a look around the churchyard tomorrow for any..

Thank you very much Allan :D

I don't get on Rootschat much these days, so my apologies for the late reply.  I still haven't sorted out the mystery, simply because I don't want to be spending on certificates that aren't direct line, and especially with the way the economy is at the moment.

Maybe one day when I win the lottery!!!!!!

Kind regards,
Jan :)
