Harelaw Cemetery
« on: Monday 14 February 05 16:16 GMT (UK) »
I was considering a trip North to check out Harelaw Cemetery for graves of my King Family relatives but understand from a friend that it is quite overgrown and unless the gravestones were on the large size (unlikely) I may be wasting my time.

Could any Durham rootschat member enlighten me ?

Thanks in advance

David King

I visited the old part of Harelaw last Easter and although it was a little overgrown had no problem in going round it and inspecting  most of  the graves. I didn't have time to go up to the newer part which looked very large, and, from a distance at least, in reasonable condition. However, had you considered starting by getting the microfilms of the Harelaw and Collierley Burial Registers via your local Family History Centre? They are on films 2104606 and 2104607, and apparently run from 1891 to 1998.

You can purchase an excellant listing of the burial at these graveyards from Annfield plian F>H>S, they cost about £10. and well worth it.

I have a copy of the APFHS burials Harelaw (Grave Inscriptions) but it would be unfair to publish the details when the original is still actively on sale. The Annfield Plain Family History Society may still meet at the Annfield Plain Library once a month. Check with the library. I can say that there are 3 King names in the Cemetery.
If the Society is meeting that is where/when publications are sold relating to to the area.

As JenB mentions films 2104606 and 2104607 will be another source as Durham County Council have allowed the (LDS) Family History Library to film their burial registers. The burial registers give ages, addresses, plot numbers of the deceased etc.. More information than a Parish Register.

Likewise I have the Marriages of St. Thomas, Harelaw, 1842-1929. Also published by the APFHS. There are 3 King names in that - one a widow. All female.

And the burials of St. Thomas Harelaw 1842-1949 on microfiche. I go to a library with a microfiche reader -old technology - when I want to read them.

Plus I have the "History of the Parish of Dipton (Colierley or Harelaw) also on microfiche.

The first few years of St. Thomas are on Bishop's Transcripts on familysearch.org

Can you tell me which members (i.e. christian names) of the KING family in Harelaw that you are interested in?

The APFHS is still going strong, there are still books available, an index to the surnames on the tombstones is on the APFHS web site
www.annfieldplain-fhs.co.uk
The society also now has some copies of the Stanley News and we are willing to do look-ups for anyone, the years we hold at present are 1935 - 1957, and shortly we will have the years 1914 to 1920.
Contact details are on the web site, also the books can be purchased through the website.

Stanley News 1914-1920

The Stanley News published photographs and a tiny bio of local soldiers that were killed/missing during World War I. Until of course when the newspaper/readers became weary of the war later in the war. A very useful genealogical source.

Marriages of St. Thomas (as John an I mentioned) are available through APFHS, burials through Original Indexes (now maintained by Northumberland and Durham Family History Society) but baptisms are only available from 1843-1846 on the Bishop's Transcripts section of familysearch.org

No one has ever transcribed the rest of St. Thomas baptisms!
