James Crawford - Victoria
« on: Wednesday 25 February 09 15:59 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm looking for information on James Crawford who was born in Scotland in 1864. I see from the family burial records in Kilmun, Argyll that James died in Ballarat, Victoria in 1898 and am trying to trace his life there. Main queries - What was cause of death? Does he appear in any census for 1891  - if so what are details? Finally, any idea when he landed in Australia?
Thanks
AScot

Hi Ascot

There is a good website of unassisted immigration to Victoria Australia but when I try to load it, an error page keeps coming up.

I shall post the link in case the site works again.

proarchives.imagineering.com.au/index_search.asp?searchid=23 - 22k -

I looked on the 1871 census for Scotland and there was 80 James Crawfords born inbetween 1862 and 1866 in Scotland. I take it you have no info on his actual birthplace within Scotland? Who did he marry?

AScot, very few censuses in Australia survive, as they have mostly been destroyed. However, BDM records are very good for those years.

Do you have the names of the parents of your James Crawford, as that would help in searching?

In your James' case, parents wouldn't help as they are not listed, if this is your James.....

Jas CRAWFORD aged 23, parents not listed, died in 1898 in Ballarat Hospital.
Ref = 5672

You can order a digital image of the death certificate at
https://online.justice.vic.gov.au/bdm/home
for about 17.50AUD .

However, the age given doesn't match the birthdate you have provided.  :-\

The index for Victorian Inquests shows that there was an inquest into the death of the James who died in 1898.

Name given was James A. Crawford and reference number is 743.

No more information than that, I'm afraid.

Hi everybody
and thanks for your help.
James was born on May 1864 in Kilmun, Argyll, Scotland. His parents were farmer John Ewing Crawford 1832-1908 and Mary McCaul 1845-1889. As he died at age 23/24 he may have been unmarried - anyway I have no knowledge of this either way.
Thanks again
