Reid's of Tarbolton, Ayrshire
« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 23:36 GMT (UK) »
Elizabeth Reid nee Thomson was born in Tarbolton in 1806 and was recorded in the 1861 Census as a Public House keeper at 18, Montgomery Street. Her husband Andrew I have been unable to trace.
Her son Andrew was born in Tarbolton in 1826 and lived there for most of his life until his death in 1898. His occupation was a silk weaver. On one of his trips away from Ayrshire he met and married Mary Ann Jerwood in Spitalfields, London and she returned to live in Tarbolton until her death in 1896.
Elizabeth's daughter, and Andrew's sister, Agness was born in Tarbolton in 1831 and was recorded in the 1901 Census as a Grocer at 43 Montgomery Street.
Public houses, grocers and silk weavers on Montgomery Street, Tarbolton - the essence of Social History. Are there any local sources of information about these trades in Ayrshire ? Does anyone have any further insight on the Reid's of Tarbolton?

There's a book 'Old Mauchline and Tarbolton' by John Hood available
ISBN No. 1840331720, Published by Stenlake Publishing, Catrine, you'll find some old photos of Montgomerie St - there's a pub, The Plough Inn, could this be where your ancestors were?

Hello Jerwood,

I dont know if you have the earlier census for Elizabeth Reid, and her children.

By 1851. she is a widow.

There are 5 children it seems to Andrew Reid, and Elizabeth Thomson.

Andrew Reid, born 29/Dec/1825. Tarbolton,
John Reid, born 05/Jan/1827, Tarbolton,
Janet Reid, born 10/April/1829. Tarbolton,
Agnes Reid, born 08/March/1831. Tarbolton,
Thomas Reid, born July/1833. Tarbolton.

A couple of these births are submissions on the IGI.

It looks as if the father Andrew has perhaps died prior to 1841.

In 1841. four of the children are with Elizabeth, in Tarbolton, less John, born 1827.

It also looks to me that Elizabeths, parents were John Thomson, and Janet Ronald, does this work out with the information you have from Elizabeths, death, ie are her parents mentioned on her death certificate.

Regards,
Jonn.

Thanks Jonn
I did have the earlier census data and son Andrew's marriage certificate - whence I got Andrew seniors details. I haven't managed to pin down Elizabeth Thomson's death so I am interested/curious about your source for her parents.
Best wishes
Jerwood
