« on: Tuesday 24 February 09 17:00 GMT (UK) »
Hello,

I'm new to this forum. I was just wondering if any of you had links to the McConaghie's from Liscolman. I know it's a small place so thought I'd try my luck!

Cheers

Hi Zander,

Thanks for your reply. Well I'm not too certain really, my grandad grew up there and he was born in 1933, his mother was born in about 1916, she was called Agnes McConaghie. His grandad was called David John McConaghie and he was a blacksmith in Liscolman. I'm not sure when he was born to be honest and my grandad has a feeling that he immgrated to Ireland from Canada or America.

My grandad's father was called Alex Kane and his family were also from Liscolman. My grandad was illegitmate and never knew his father, it's only in recent years that he has found out who he was discovered that the Kane family that lived near by were in fact his relatives!

Any help you can give would be much appreciated.

Thanks

Hi SallyA,
I'm new to roots chat and have been trawling through old posts.
My husband's grandmother was Jean McConaghie b1921. She was the sister of your Agnes!
I have been attempting to do some work on his family tree but am not getting very far as they are a superstitous lot and think messing with your ancestors is bad luck!
If you are still intersted, PM me and I will share what little I have. I warn you that they were a big family - 9 children that I know of!
Heather

It's lovely when different branches of a family 'meet' and you can PM each other with recent family details which you can't post online but for reference here's a bit on the family-

1911 census- www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1911/Antrim/Carnmoon/Liscolman/129079
1901 census- parents David (blacksmith) & Elizza:
www.census.nationalarchives.ie/pages/1901/Antrim/Carnmoon/Liscolman/945335

Widowed mother Eliza in 1911 with a few children still at home:

Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!

Hi,
Not sure if this is relevant but a David McConaghie was born to Alexander McConaghie and Mary Anne McVeagh on 13 Feb 1870. The birth was registered in Croagh, Ballycastle district. A twin brother, William, was also registered.

Thanks Aghadowey for posting those links. I had found them too. They were all members of Mosside Presbyterian Church and that is where Jean is buried.
Kingskerwell - I haven't managed to find an Alexander McConaghie yet but at that time the family were still using the McConachie spelling. If I remember correctly it was David, Jean and Agnes' father who first subsituted the 'c' for a 'g'.
I hope Sallya still keeps an eye on rootschat and picks up this thread again - it's been 3 years since she first posted.

Hi Severick,

There are so many David John McConaghies in the family that it gets very confusing! I've had a look at the tree I'm working on to see if I can find out where you fit in. Are you the son of a David J. McConaghie too which would mean that the lady in the photo is Eliza McMullan? I would like to PM you so we can share our info but don't think I can til you have made at least 3 posts (Moderator-is that correct?)
