So he served in South Africa during the Boer War as a Railway Staff Officer. The bit in brackets probably describes how much he was paid. In August 1914 he is back in Camberley as a student at the Staff College. He is also described as “Qualified as a 1st Class Interpreter in a Modern Foreign Language”, qualifying in October 1909. The VB/TF were earlier versions of the TA, so he was on the permanent staff as Adjutant for a while.
PS...we have been here before haven’t we Cas?
