esther berry
« on: Sunday 22 February 09 15:26 GMT (UK) »
hello,im seeking info on the family of esther berry born 1861 in ramsgate, kent, she was the wife of my ancestor john joseph darby,he was a fish hawker born 1859 ramsgate.ive found esther on the 1881,shes also a hawker,as is her sister mary(b1851) who shes living with.marys husband was a scrap dealer called charles craycraft.i have uncovered a family of travelling hawkers named berry who were stopping in 4 caravans in ramsgate on the 1871,ive managed to find them stopping and travelling across kent on other cencuses, mainly thanet, folkstone, deal, hythe, dover, canterbury etc,but they seem to originate from the hastings area of sussex.i think its highly probable that mary and esther are connected to this family.any help with who their siblings and parents  might be would be greatly appreciated, thanks, nel.

This John Joseph Darby made a second marriage to Alice Maud Mary Davis (Harris) 1928, Herne Bay. He gives his father's name as Richard Darby, mariner. Do you have any information about Alice?

Hello Aquila,

i only have what i got from a GU member who helped me when i was looking for info on Esther.

She was Alice Maud Mary Harris born 1866 Peckham, died 1928.

She had 7 siblings which i can give if you dont have them.

Parents Walter born 1829 Surrey and Elizabeth ??? born 1833 Lambeth.

Her other husband was Thomas Davis born 1863 Peckham, son of John born 1836 Blackheath and Mary Ann Mouse born 1836 Camberwell.

I remember this contact telling me Alices family were travellers, but initial searches didnt bear this out.Walter was a stone mason and settled.

Having said that,i didnt look into Davis, she may have meant them,i now know there are Davis travellers.

None of this info has been confirmed by me,it came as part of her reply.

Hope this helps a bit,

Nel.

Dear Nel

Many thanks for this - yes I do have this info. Alice's mum Elizabeth is the likely traveller, but I can't find a maiden name. Did any of J J Darby's children know Alice, and is anything remembered about her? Alice's children certainly met J J Darby when Alice and John were living at Herne Bay.

Hello again Aquila,

Im afraid i dont know anything about John after about 1900.

My connection is Richard Darbys marriage to Sophia Spain, and i havent researched beyond about 1900 yet.

Sorry i cant be of much help,

Nel.

Thanks for getting back Nel.

Casalguidi this is super, many thanks. I have the census returns, but three of the four christenings are new to me. No sign of birth certificates however. I've been searching bmd on and off for years for this family. Deaths are registered - for example the Alfred Ernest of the christening dies a few weeks later - but births and marriages are elusive.

Hi,
Walter Harris is in my family tree and I have all the information you have and lots of wrong certificates, I am now searching for a possible marriage for Walter Harris and Elizabeth circa 1852 the year their first child was born in the workhouse and wondered if they married in the workhouse, St Martins in the Field, and if there are any records? :-\
