WOOLNOUGHS of blything 1840-1847
« on: Monday 14 February 05 07:18 GMT (UK) »
Am looking for census listing for Thomas Woolnough and wife Mary Ann Woolnough(nee Balls).  They married Q3 1840 Blything.  They may have had 3 children(John, Emma and William).  Mary Ann appears to die Q4 1847 Blything.

I was hoping someone would be able to find them living in the Blything district in 1841.

I notice that the FreeBMD entry for this death doesn't give an age, and I have found a burial at Wrentham, which is in Blything Reg Disrict, which could account for the entry.

WOOLNOUGH Mary Ann, aged 7months, buried St Nicholas, Wrentham Suffolk 31st December, 1847.

The 1841 Census is not indexed, and Blything Registration District covers a large area.  The 1851 is indexed, but I cannot find an obvious candidate for Thomas.

Would you like me to move your post to the Suffolk Lookup Requests board?  You may have more luck there.

Rick :)

Thanks Rick, that kind of helps.  I think Thomas and Mary emigrated to Aust as I have their first child born in Melb Aust at the end of 1840(ie a few months after marriage).  I just wasn't sure if that was going to be the right marriage(the 1840 Blything one).  I was kind of hoping that the 1847 death was hers, as she has her last child in melb in 1846 and then there is no death listing for her anywhere in Australia.  I was suspecting she was ill and returned/died in UK.  Her son(my Gr GR GR Grandfather always said she died when he was young.

How far is Blything from London ? do you know ?
I thought it was actually in London

The only Blything that I know of is actually a Registration District in Suffolk and not a place.  This part of Suffolk is I suppose about 50 or 60 miles from London

I finally received the marriage cert(30-7-1840) of my suspected Thomas Woolnough.  It turns out this entry is for the marriage of Thomas W and Betsy Balls.  Parish of Blyford, Suffolk.

Thomas is listed as having father John(which is correct, but common name).  He is listed as being a Baker(my Thomas was a labourer in Aust).

Can anyone find anything further on Thomas and Betsy.  I can't.

I am going to move your post over to the Suffolk Lookup Requests board, because I suspect you may well get a better response there.

Can't find a Thomas and Betsey that match up in the 1851 census.

Hi Garry

I am sorry that we have been unable to help with finding Thomas for you in 41. :(  I don't know if you are still looking for this information, but I have checked the Suffolk 1841 index but sadly I cannot find a Thomas with a wife Betsy or Mary Ann.

Sorry

I have had someone contact me directly via email, who can trace his Woolnough line back to the Betsy and Thomas who I have Marriage cert for.  He can basicly show that they are not mine, because they all stayed in Suffolk, to this day !

He has sent me data on them through Census 51-about 91
