Irish in Merthyr Tydfil
« on: Saturday 21 February 09 02:48 GMT (UK) »
There are many Irish in Merthyr with most being from Cork but also from other counties. Since so many came due to the famine (late 1840's early 1850's) it is difficult getting them back to their Irish townland. Census generally say Ireland for place of birth.
My Collin's came in the mid 1840's and Murphy's in early 1850's. Both families from Cork. They all stayed in Merthyr giving me quite a large branch on my tree with many, many Irish names.
I think they came in bunches with family and neighbors from Ireland. I would love to hear from others that fit in this category to see if we could work together to get them home. I do have some resources like Parish records that may help. Joan

One of my Mum's aunts, from Pontypridd, married a Reardon.

My grandfather had English ancestors, named Hampton & Thornton, who moved to Merthry Tydfil, where one of my Hamptons married a Doyle. My Doyles were Irish.

William Reardon(father Timothy) married Mary Collins(Father Timothy) in Merthyr Tydfil in 1849. They had 5 children First born in 1847. Had 2 Timothy's, William and 2 Johns. One William and Timothy survived. It was William that married Catherine Murphy in Cardiff in 1880.

Older William died and Mary married Michael Donovan.  William had brother Patrick Reardon and possibly 2 others in Merthyr. Joan

Those names don't actually sound familiar, but these were relatives by marriage, so I don't know much about them. I think that the surname may have been quite common in Glamorgan??

First time post.  Looking to find any living ancestors of Patrick Jospeh Butler born Roslea Northern Ireland.  He had a sister Agnes Butler.  I believe they born around 1915 to 1920s.
