Age given as Minor on Marriage cert
« on: Friday 20 February 09 23:27 GMT (UK) »
Can anyone help?

My GGGgrandmother is listed as a minor on her marriage certificate. Do all Irish marriage certificates from the 1800's only list Full age or Minor? What does minor mean?

Many Thanks

Full age was 21 years or older. Irish marriage certificates listed ages of bride and groom as 'full age' or minor.
In Northern Ireland circa 1947 it was changed to age in years and then in 1970s changed to exact birthdate.

Only wish it was that easy- don't be fooled by the information 'full age' etc. I've found 17 year old as 'full age' and 22 year old as minor!

Thanks for the advice.

I can only find her marriage record at the moment on the new pilot site for Irish BMD's. Will keep looking as it is work in progress.

Have found details of her father who was in the Royal Irish Constabulary. They do a records search facility so will be parting with some more cash next week to commission them to search for his records.

Civil registration of births began 1864- do you think she would have been born after 1864? If so, try searching in IGI (www.familysearch.org)- many, not all, Irish births 1864-c1882 are there. If you know the mother's name (even just her first name) you can do parent search in LDS site which might turn up details of other siblings.

She was married in 1868, so her DOB could be around 1840-46, before civil registrations. Her daughter born in the Curragh camp Kildare is also not registered either on the civil list (just got a nil return from Irish GRO) nor on Army records. Might just have to wait until they completed the records and see if her death record appears at some point.

The Police records do list marriage and postings so I might be able to trace through that way.
