Yes, I think the initial speed of the research lulled me into a sense of false security. The ironic thing is that if I am correct about the identity of his mother then she is a part of a tree proven back to around 1300AD. As there was only one Luffman family in the village at the time of his birth I have a fair idea of his father, it was either William Luffman being a naughty boy at the age of 22, or less likely (I hope!) his father, also William being a VERY naughty boy.

I'm sure RootsChat will be of help.

I've only just started looking around the site but the "Getting started / Beginners links" post looks really useful. It has links there that are new to me.

Absolutely first class. Only just joined but when you trawl back through the posts there is so much information, priceless and the people both knowledgeable and more importantly, willing to share.

Hi pool1, I expect by now you are beginning to make real progress.

You've found a very good site in RootsChat, ray-1 I'm sure you will enjoy your time here and you never know, one day you may be come one of the 'knowledgeable people willing to share.'
It happened to me. I had a few photos restored and got hooked, now I am doing them for other people. RootsChat is magic.

Good luck to you both.

According to family legend, my father's first cousin once removed was a footballer who played for either Chelsea or Fulham football clubs in the early 1930s and had died soon after a match.  I'd searched their lists of old players but had no luck finding him.

I was browsing the useful links board yesterday evening and found one for old newspapers (http://newspapers.nl.sg/Default.aspx)  and put the family surname in on the off chance there might be something about any of my relatives.  In a Singapore newspaper was a report of  Ernest Rassell's death and giving the name of his team - Kingstonian, an amateur team!  Who would have thought I'd find the answer halfway round the world  :o  I found out that his brother Frederick also played for Kingstonian, all from the same link.   ;D

Just one example of how Rootschat has helped me, it's great here  :D
