Thanks Dee, I've just been looking at the 1911 census and think I may have found him:

George STENTON head 36 married (7 years) Miner Coal Hewer Barnsley Yorkshire
Emma STENTON wife 35 married
Edith STENTON 8
Else STENTON 4
Elizabeth Ann STENTON 1


If this is him, it appears that he was in the area in 1911 and married about 1904.

It is still a puzzle as to where he was around 1900.

Thanks Isobelruss, I have ordered a copy of the transcript and printed it out for reference.  That looks like a useful website.

There is a marriage in 1903-Barnsley for George Stenton and one of the others on the same page is an Emma Scales.
