Help - Crossgates - which Parish?
« on: Thursday 19 February 09 09:51 GMT (UK) »
Hi I am trying to track down a family member Maria Martin who married/lived in Dundee and lists herself on several census' as born in Crossgates but cant seem to decide when ! Its anything between 1811 and 1827!  I dont know which parish her birth would be listed under as Crossgates does not seem to be listed in its own right but  I am sure one of you wonderful people out there know! All hints greatfully received.

Hi KK

Have a look here for Crossgates in Fife ... http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/sct/FIF/parishes.htm

Aye mair questions than answers in a world where the past was a different place - that cannae be revisited!

Family surnames being researched ...
Crawford, Neilson, Lindsay, Reekie, Davidson
Drummond, Laing, Pearson, Tulloch ... will do for starters but there's a whole lot more!

Kerry -

There's also Inverkeithing parish, whose northern boundary reached up to the edge of Crossgates.

So if you draw a blank with both Dunfermline and Dalgety there's a (perhaps slight) possibility that Maria Martin was actually born in Inverkeithing parish, though the nearest village was Crossgates.

Harry.
Ballingall, Donaldson, Fulton, Gillespie, Ramsay, Walker - in Fife.
Bury - in Salford & Liverpool.
Jack - in Glasgow, Dunfermline & Dundee.
Bermingham/Birmingham - in Cork.

Thanks Harry

I drew a blank at both Dalgety and Inverkeithing and decided to double check the Dunfermline one only to have her appear this time - who knows what I must have spelt incorrectly last time not to get the match !

thanks again for the help - it inspired me to double check so indirectly got me there ..now wondering what else I've missed !!

Hi Kerry

Have you discounted Maria Martin b. 29th August 1811 and baptised 16 Nov 1811  Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland, daughter of Duncan Martin and Maria Crerar? This is on LDS extracted from OPR. Duncan and Maria have another daughter Judith b. 1815 listed on this. This doesn't mention Crossgates, just that Duncan "servant to Mr. Williamson in Edinburgh".

Kerry

I checked deaths for Maria Martin and, following up on your Dundee connection, found that Marie Martin, daughter of Duncan Martin and Marie Crerar died 12 June 1882 in Dundee. She was the widow of William Cant. Age at death given as 55 years i.e. born 1817 which doesn't agree with the OPR I quoted in last post. Vanity?

By the way, Duncan was a gamekeeper and children born in various locations in East Lothian (?), Fife, Perthshire.
