Archelaus Hancock of Stoke, Derbyshire

Looking for marriage details, if there is any available of Archelaus Hancock birth abt. 1810 to a Martha Dungworth. I have a marriage date of 25 April 1830 Sheffield. Archelaus was a confectioner/baker who was born Stoke, Goatscliffe near Grindleford/Stoney Middleton. I have checked the website of Rosemary Lockie which is a fabulous but sadly cannot find the father of Archelaus. There are others of the same name including Hercules/Herculi.

Children of Archelaus and Martha to date are Louisa, William, Elizabeth, Albert, Emma, Archelaus, Martha Mary (2xgrtgrandmother) and Lucy Ellen Hancock.  I have two lines of Hancocks to follow one is on my mother's side the other my father's side. The family mainly live in the Ecclesall Bierlow end of Sheffield and the other line Broad Oak Green/Bents Green and Dore/Totley side of Sheffield each seperate line not living far from one another!!

I visited the General Cemetery Sheffield where Archelaus is buried with his wife and other family members but sadly there is no MI. The whole area is grassed over with no stones whatsoever.

Martha Mary Hancock married William George Thompson in 1871 Sheffield.

Really hoping someone can may be give me a lead on this or a point in the right direction.

I can't help with Archelaus but have connections to the Bents Green and Dore area Hancocks through two different sides of my dad's family.

Maybe we can compare notes.....

Would love to compare notes and see if we have a connection......

the line I have starts with Ethel Hancock, father Harry Hancock and mother Clara Leedale.  Father of Harry, Samuel Hancock and mother Emma Maria Guest. Father of Samuel,  George Hancock and mother Anne Unknown. Other names include Selina, Lewis, Cornelius etc.

Does any of those names compare with yours for starters?

There are plenty of Lewis and Selinas in our line too.

I think the connection is in the Samuel - son of George and Ann generation but I can't remember the details off the top of my head. Will find out the relevant notes tomorrow and get back to you.

Was your Samuel born around 1841 and lived on Sherrington Rd.

If so he was the brother of my Gx3 grandfather John Hancock. Their parents were George Hancock and Ann Dalton. Samuel and John's siblings were Selina, Ann, Mary and Henry, also possibly a George, but I haven't been able to find much about him.

I have details for George's parents but can't trace further back than that. Some of the family believed that they were related to the Hancocks of the Riley Graves at Eyam although I haven't found any evidence of this. My great-grandfather thought that they were actually from a little village called Windmill which isn't far from Eyam. Have you heard anything similar?

Not been online long, just give me a few minutes to check my information. The name Sherrington Road rings a bell. I was in that area on Saturday at the General Cemetery and also further up the road in Ecclesall at All Saints Church.

When I first started looking at the Hancock side, there were two Ethel Hancock's to choose from...... me as I did then chose the wrong one but it did work back to the Hancocks of Eyam and the Riley Graves which I have visited on numerous occaisions..... makes you wonder why they ventured from that area into the city but as we know it was the work and industry was taking off at that time in the city.

As far as I can see it is the same Samuel Hancock. On the 1881 census he is shown as living 30 Sherrington Road, Ecclesall. He was also married twice firstly to a Ada Carlisle and to that marriage they had one child (to date) called Andrew. They married in 1861 at St. Philip's Church, Shalesmoor. I only happened perchance on that information whilst looking through the information on a website called Sheffield Indexers.

To Samuel's second marriage which was to a Emma Maria Guest from Barnsley. They married in 1867 and had the following children (to date) Martha Ann, Cornelius, Ada, Harry, Lewis and Horace. (My line descends down through Harry). I am still putting my information together on this but the parents I have for Samuel are George and Ann and their children were John, Selina, Samuel and Henry. The 1861 census shows Mary Dalton as sisterinlaw with Samuel at that time.

So does this definitely sound like we have a family connection?

I have found a lot on Sheffield Indexers too.

Form the Ecclesall burial records I found that George Hancock died in his son Samuel's house on Sherrington Rd in 1880 so he must have been living with them at the time.

My Gx3 grandfather was married to Emma Vickers, my line is through their son also called John.  His son was my great-grandad and would, I suppose have been your Ethel's second cousin. So, yes, it does look like we have a connection - or probably quite a few

I normally try to get to Ecclesall All Saints at least once a year, I have never found many Hancock graves though.
