The baptism of Maria Brookes - 1900
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 10:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi - I have the birth certifcate of an ancestor, Maria Brookes, and there is no father recorded. I would therefore like to locate the corresponding baptism record (if one exists) on the off chance that the father's name is recoreded therein.  I know it's a long shot but perhaps I'll get lucky, and therefore I would appreciate the help of anyone that can shed light on this for me.  The information I have on the birth certificate is as follows:

Registration District Sheffield
Year 1900
Sub district West Brightside in the County of Sheffield
When and where 22nd January 1900, 10 Court, Bridgehouses.
Name Maria Brookes
Sex Girl
Father ?
Mother Eliza Martin, Domestic Servant
Informant Eliza Martin, MOther, 10 Court, Bridgehouses, Sheffield
When registered 5th March 1900
Registrar C. A. Morley

Any help would be appreciated.

Marcus

It looks to me like Brookes is Maria's middle name  :) The birth is indexed uner MARTIN.

In 1901 the address is listed as "Pyebank 5H Ct 10" which is probably the same house or at least court as on the certificate as 'Bridgehouses' is more of an 'area' than a street and Pyebank was a road running through it.

The parish shown on this census sheet is Holy Trinity, Wicker. The records are held at Sheffield Archives. SheffieldIndexers have transcribed some earlier baptisms (1840's and '50's). I don't know if they have any later films to transcribe.

I note that Maria is listed as the sister of Eliza in the census. (1901: piece 4374 folio 78 page 20).

Hi and thanks for the reply.  Sorry if I'm missing something but I'm slightly confused on this one.  The birth certificate has the name Maria Brooks on it but you say that the birth is indexed under Martin.  To what index are you referring?
Thanks

Hello Marcus,

The index Carolanne quotes is the GRO index (searchable at ancestry.com and other sites). This is the official index of registrations of Births Marriages and Deaths.

Column 2 of a birth certificate lists forenames only. So this child's fornames are Maria Brookes and her surname is supplied by her mother's name (since her father is not listed). So she is Maria Brookes MARTIN.

It is not unusual for a 'surname' used as a middle name in such cases to give a hint of the father's name, but this is not foolproof :)
