Thomas Roderick LETSOM (1792-1880)
« on: Tuesday 17 February 09 00:43 GMT (UK) »
Thomas Roderick LETSOM, my gggrandfather, was reportedly born in Shropshire in 1792.  He married before 1821 in Oswestry, Shropshire, Margaret DAVIES, born 1790 in either Wales or Cornwall.

They had four children - Thomas William, b. 1821; Mary, b. 1823; John Thomas, b. 1828; and Edward N., b. 1830.   All births were in Oswestry.

The family emigrated in 1845 - first to NY, then on to Racine, Wisconson (except for my ggrandfather, John Thomas, who took a ship around Cape Horn to California goldfields before ending up in Oregon.

Can anyone help me find another generation - the parents of Thomas and/or Margaret?

Thanks, Ken Rob (California)

There is a marriage (unfortunately no date or place listed) of a Thomas LETSOM born 1795 in England to a Margaret DAVIES born in Wales.
Also there is Thomas LETSHAM to a Margaret DAVIES married 10 May 1819 in Oswestry, Shropshire. No parents are listed in the transcription, but if you get (or if someone can look up for you) the original records then the parents may possibly be listed. Their son Thomas born 14 Sep 1821 baptised 7 Oct 1821 (again as LETSHAM) is baptised in the Welsh Chapel Calvanistic Methodist, Castle Lane, Oswestry-so this maybe the place where they married, especially as the father is listed as Thomas LETSHAM, the mother as Margaret DAVIES, so it would seem as if the church knew them.

Thank you very much!  I will accept "Letsham" as "Letsom" as just another misspelling of a name.  It was misspelled in the records in USA any number of ways.

Also, it appears that the birthdate I had for Thomas (the son) was actually his baptismal date, perhaps because that was what was written in a family Bible originally.

Thank you very much!
