Are these occupations connected????
« on: Monday 16 February 09 15:37 GMT (UK) »
Hi

I have possibly found an ancestor of mine in the 1881 Census living at the time in the Parish of Hammersmith Parlimentary borough of Chelsea.  His occupation at the time was "Income derived from house" he was actually living with his sister and her husband whose occupation was also the same.  My question is a few years later in 1883 on a birth certificate of my possible gt grandfather his occupation states "Gentleman".

Is there any connection between these occupations in anyway??

Thanking you in advance.

I think "Gentleman" in that sense means he didn't have to work,he was living off his own means....

Hi Hepburn

Thank you for replying to my post - do you think then in this case that I could comfortably be looking at the same man? he was making sufficient money from his own means i.e "income derived from house" that in 1883 he stated he was a Gentleman.

Gentleman;  A man of superior position in society, or having the habits of life indicative of this; often, one whose means enable him to live in easy circumstances without engaging in trade, a man of money and leisure.  :)
