Thats amazing!  :)

I'd actually be interested in all the information if thats not to much trouble. I'm on Genes Reunited if you have a tree there it would probably be the least hassel way to see the connections.

I'd be really interested in the ancestors you mention firstly.

In what way are we cousins?

Heather

I've just seen your note from earlier this year which refers to your grandfather Thomas Whitelaw and says: "... Their son Thomas married Mary McKenzie Campbell in Glasgow on 30th January 1920 ..."
I have Mary McKenzie Campbell on my tree - the daughter of Thomas Campbell and Elizabeth Knox Smith, who married in 1891.  If I have it all correct, Eliz Knox Smith was born in 1868, the daughter of William Wilson Smith and Mary McKenzie, who married in 1865.  That Mary McKenzie was born abt 1844, daughter of John McKenzie and Elisabeth Knox who married in 1844.  I am a descendant of Margaret McKenzie, a sister of Mary.  John McKenzie and Elisabeth Knox are my 2xgt-grandparents and your 3xgt-grandparents; that makes us third cousins once-removed.
If you would like to share info up the McKenzie & Knox lines, could you send me a Personal Message with your email?
Cheers
Colin in Melbourne

I haven't made it far enough back to determine whether my Sands family ties into this one, but it's worth a shot to see if anyone has any information.

I am looking for the ancestry of John Sands, born approximately 1861 in Ireland. Married Jane in 1885 and immigrated to the United States (specifically Pennsylvania) in 1888. The Pennsylvania census says both John and Jane were born in Ireland and their eldest son, also named John, was born approximately one year before they left Ireland (1887). They had other children in the States - Andrew Sands (1890), James Sands (1893), Bernhard Sands (1895), Marie / Mary Sands (1896), Elizabeth / Susan Sands (1898), Agnes Sands (1900), Edward Sands (1903), Hellen Sands (1904) and Joseph Sands (1910).

Does anyone happen to know whether this family ties into any of the Sands families you've researched? I've reached a dead end. Other than the census where they claim to have immigrated in 1888, I can't find a passenger list or any other means of determining how they got to the United States.

I'd appreciate any information whatsoever!

I am very new to this forum i.e. I  joined today but I found it using google and I was very excited to find the name Sands of Port of Menteith as this is a line I have been tracing. In Chevalier's post of 3/9/09 under paragraph 2, he mentioned John Sands of Ward of Goodie farm who I am almost certain is my great great grandfather. In the 1881 census he is living at this farm with wife Margaret (nee McNab?) and 5 of their children the youngest of whom is 7. So John Sands must have been about 70 when this child was born!
There is another child Jeanie who is about 17 in 1881 who, I believe, is living with her uncle at a nearby farm. She appears in the 1871 census living at Wart of Gooch (sic) Farm. I believe Jeanie is my great grandmother  who I can trace through my late mother's side of the family. I see from Chevalier's post that Margaret is John's second wife. Alexander, who is John's son by his first marriage must be my great grandmother's half brother.
Not sure if this is old news but I have some more information if anyone is interested.
