Hi

I am looking for links to:

Benjamin CRABB b. c1816 father James

In 1841 married to a Caroline, daughter Eliza. Living North Tawton. He's a woolcomber.

1843 there's a marriage to Catherine Smith. Witness Grace CRABB.

In 1851, no Benjamin. But Catherine is lodging with John Scantlebury, Eliza (from above)
and daughter Lucy (who's Lucy Scantlebury Crabb, but the BC does not name the father!)
all in Bodmin.

I have drawn blanks for a CRABB famliy in Cornwall/Devon with Benjamin, Grace, James
and children Eliza and Lucy.

I have no other details. I am wonderinf if Benjamin came from the Loders lines?

Any ideas people? Help much appreciated.

Yes, been there ... and absolutely NO link or mention of my Crabb lines. Very odd really.

I now know that Benjamin married CATHERINE Smith in 1843, Bodmin. In fact, Eliza born in North Tawton was to Catherine. Also, Benjamin was working for Richard Vercoe, a woolstapler, in Bodmin 1843.  Richard's wife was Elizabeth Smith (so did Benjamin marry his boss's sister???)

The name Caroline is now wrong, even though it's very clearly written in the 1841 census. This must be a copying error from the enumerators notes onto the main return.

I have found a baptism for Benjamin (1815) to James and Esther.  James was born in Stoke (nr Clovelly) and Esther Jenkins was born St. Teath. 

Interestingly the family of a William and Margery Crabb can be found living in the next house to James, Esther and a Julia Crabb.  The first born of William was Esther (or Hester), and at that time he was also Woolcomber. Later he is listed as a police constable, and appears in many newpaper reports as a "constable of Callington".

I am therefore guessing that William (b. c1806) is a relative of James , probably son and brother of Benjamin.

No trace of who Grace Crabb might be, the marriage witness. Again, must be a relative, probably sister.

So, any other help will come in useful.

I think my problem is that there are 2 distinct branches of the CRABBS. One lot from Loders/Bridport area and the other in Cornwall.  I suspect that somewhere in the past they are linked!

However, MY Crabb branch, which seems to have settled down in Callington/Bodmin area, they seem to come from
the North of the county on the Devon/Cornwall border.

None of the on-line Crabb lines seem to come from there, and hence they do not link in with the Crabbs which have been in the Bodmin area and environs for ever!

But, given that they "came home" to Callington, I wonder which branch they came from and when James moved up to Stoke and why?

So, technically NOT a Dorset problem anymore ... unless of course, James was from the Loders clan and moved!

Who knows ...

Hi,

I have CRABBE ancestors moving between Cornwall / Devon. WILLIAM AURELIOS CRABB married my ggggrandmothers sister MARIA VICTOR, 1851, Liskeard, Cornwall. He was baptised 1828, Botus Flemming, Cornwall and his parents were SIGISMUNG CRABBE, born 1802, Linkinhorn, and ELIZABETH GARTRELL. married Linkinhorne, 1824. Children of SIGISMUND and ELIZABETH are JOHN, JOSEPH, ELIZABETH LUISA and MARY ANN. Children of WILLIAM and MARIA are RHODA MARIA, LYDIA, ELIZABETH, FANNY, SIGISMUND, JESSIE, BATHSHEBA, WILLIAM and CLARA. WILLIAM AURELIOS was a stone mason and their children were born sporadically between Cornwall and Devon. They were living in Callington on the 1841 census.

Could there be a link?

This is a different family line to mine, but I would expect at some point in the distant past they were linked.

Mine are from Stoke Climsland, Callington, South Hill areas of Cornwall.

I visited the Inn in Callington last Easter which my relative ran/owned in 1823! The Bull's Head, opposite the church. I raised a glass to James Crabb !

I have lost track of Benjamin Crabb, b 1815. So far I know he married Catherine Smith in 1843 in Bodmin. He had his daughter Eliza in 1840 (who married Hugo Francis Hawkins, and their daughter Kate was my grandma). They also had other children, James and Edward who only lived a year.  Benjamin worked for Richard Vercoe as a woolcomber in 1843. By 1850 Catherine had children with John Scantlebury, but not married. She died in the Bodmin workhouse in Mar 1854 as did her son 6  months later in Sep 1854, James by John.

Lucy Scantlebury Crabb appears to have survived along with Eliza. I have not traced Lucy as yet.

No trace of Benjamin after the birth of Edward in 1844 (his BC names Benjamin as the father, his death in 1845 was not registered by him though).

So, I need to find something about a Benjamin Crabb, 1815 - ?, parents James and Esther (nee Jenkins). No sign of a death or another marriage.

I suspect he may have gone overseas, but as yet am not sure. There's a hint there may be something to do with mining.

Just thought I'd let you know I'm one of Bathsheba Crabbe's descendants (great, great granddaughter). I know she spent some time in Exmouth Lunatic Asylum so I'm going to go and try to find more information about her and her family.
