Cant find Where G-Grandparents are buried
« on: Sunday 15 February 09 18:25 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

I am new to English research, and I have hit a wall that I just cant seem to knock down.  My G-grandfather Robert L Boal died in 1923 and his Wife Ellen Jane died 1950.  I was told they were buried in Phillips Park Cemetery, and I contacted them and they are not there.  I know my G-Grandparents lived only a couple blocks from that Cemetery, then someone said maybe wthey were buried in the Wesleyan Cemetery that is now a Shopping Mall.  Does anyone know how I can find where my family is Buried??  Im totally stuck on this, please any advise is helpful.

Hi,

There were a few Cemeteries in the same area as Phillips park, All saints church was at the opposite end of the road & had its own cemetery, and an additional 'overflow' cemetery known as "Orford Road" which closed in the 1950s I think.

There is also Moston Cemetery which is a mainly Catholic one, Hollinwood Cemetery not far away, and The Weslyan Cemetery mentioned over in Cheetham Hill area.

Both Orford Road & the Weslyan are now sadly both gone - I had family in Orford Rd and possibly in the Weslyan too.

Do you know what religion they were? that may narrow it down.
I just checked the Manchester online register & they arent listed there.

I assumed that they were Methodist, but havent confirmed that at all.  I guess I will have to try to find Obituaries to confirm where they could be buried.  Or how do I order Death records?

Im sorry all I know is that they married in Belfast 2 Jun 1893.
1911 Census shows that they lived at 14 Kirloch street Bradford Manchester England, im guessing at the street spelling.  I do know Robert was a Fireman, and he also worked at the Oxford Packing Co.  Thats what the 1911 Census had said.

Hi Sharon,

OK, I would try Moston Cemetery even if its just to rule it out.
I am working on the fact that they were married in Ireland and Bradford and Cheetham had quite a lot of Irish Catholic Families living there.
In the 1900s Ireland was a predominatly Catholic Country.

Moston is quite close to Phillips park, and not registered on the Manchester Online website.
(Its about a 15 minute walk between the 2)

It might be worth checking even if its only to rule it out.
I have the contact details somewhere downstairs I will look them out for you in the morning.

Thank you so much for trying to help me.  If you can give me an idea as to where I might find an obituary, it could solve this whole mess im going through.  My Uncle is still alive, and if they were buried in that Methodist Cemetery I wont have the heart to tell him what happened to the remains.  He would be devastated.  Talk to you tomorrow, and thank you again.
