My opinion is that Staffordshire Place changed its name to Staffordshire Street sometime between 1851 and 1861.

There appears to have been a similar number of dwellings in both Place and Street and there seems to have been "The White Swan" in both.

Quite a number of residents in Staffordshire Place in 1851 are in the same dwellings in Staffordshire Street in 1861 census.

That seems a reasonable supposition Selina, My grandmother told me many years ago that Cambridge Place had a formidable reputation, something like Dodge City etc. Perhaps Staffordshire Place changed its title to avoid guilt by association?

A little to far away from Cambridge Place for the residents of Staffordshire Place to be concerned about I think.

Staffordshire Place/Street was/is in the Barnwell district.  In those days mostly a very poor area and a very dodgy one earlier on!

Well suited then! I didn't know about the reputation of the Barnwell district, though I am told I had relatives there too!See list at foot for names.

I have quite a few Barnwell connections over various years and I lived in the area, near the river, when I was a child.  There were still some poor parts then.

I used to go to Cambridge Place to general furniture auctions with my mother.  Not much left down there at that time as far as I can recall and just looking at my Cambridge directories I see that in 1930 there were about  60 dwellings, by the next directory I have, 1951,  there is just a club, auction rooms, a joiners and a chapel.  So must have been a mass clearance at some point!

None of your names in my tree though.

At least 2 more names Ke(i)fford and Willis will be going into the list when I update it. The Stimpson name for Cambridgeshire ought really be in Lincolnshire, they just lived on the southern side of the frontier nr Wisbech.
