I have been trying to find when the Gottschalk line arrived in Australia.

August Gottschalk's Aug 1884 hospital entry mentions that he has spent 35 years in the colony: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6D-8SNZ-4?i=278 (#1454)

And, his final hospital stay in Jul 1885 mentions that he has spent 35 years in the colony, but also that he arrived on the ship “Livonia”: https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6D-8SN3-V?i=319 (#1206)

FYI a possible arrival for the Livonia: https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/38444307
(Unfortunately there does not seem to be a list of her passengers)

Thankyou.  His name was actually Carl August Gottschalk.  I have also tried to look at the Ships Passenger List but not many names appear to be listed.  I am a member of Geneology SA and will see if they can help any further.
thanks again, Dianne.

His name was actually Carl August Gottschalk.

I'm not sure what you are trying to say here? Are you under the impression that this isn't your guy because the name "Carl" wasn't included?

This would mean that the “August GOTTSCHALK” whose death was registered on 27 Aug 1885 in Kensington is not your guy? And that Wilhelmine (1853), Emma (1856), Wilhelm (1858), George (1860) and Frederick (1870) cannot have been his children because dad’s name was only August GOTTSCHALK on the Birth/Baptism certificate(and mum’s name was only Augusta in 3 of the cases)?

FYI It was quite normal for Germans to use only one of their names and/or only a derivative of a name.

Hi TreeSpirit -
I am in no doubt that we are speaking of the same person - The information I found was that his name was Carl August Gottschalk and I have Augusta's (Auguste) name as Caroline Augusta - however I would have to go back to see where I actually sourced all the information from. If you have the baptism records you would be right, I would say.

I have Wilhelmine  Carlotte Dorotea Auguste b.1853-d.1905; Ema Ada Caroline b.1856; Wilhelm August Albert b.1858-d.1884; George August Edward b.1860; Herman William Henry b.1865; Frederick Alfred b.1870-d.1914.

Another annomoly I have is that while I have August Gottschalk's children with the birthdates as you have listed - I also have his children Auguste b.1852; Arthur Edwin Rudolf b.1872-d.1872; Ferdinand August Arthur b.1874; and my Great Grandfather Carl George Frederick (Charles August) b.1867 Kensington-d.1842 Hazelwood Park, Tramways Despatcher who died a result of a work accident at Grenfell and King William Street, Adelaide.  Carl George Frederick (Charles August) married Ada Vincent in 1889 and they lived at Maylands.  Ada Vincent was b.1869 Willunga - d.1958 Beulah Park. I have an Aunt who is still living, Norma Magdeline Gottschalk nearing 102 years who remembers her Grandfather Carl George Frederick (Charles August) Gottschalk having died as a result of an accident whilst working at the Tramways as did my mother Joyce Cecilia Gottschalk sister to Norma and now deceased.

When I find time I will review where I located this information and endeavour to confirm.

102 years ... how wonderful!

FYI There is no anomaly reg the children. I was trying to prove that the single name “August” is not an issue ...
i.e. on the children's BC's:
Auguste 15-01-1852 Kensington (dad August)
Wilhelmine C(h?)arlotte Dorethea Auguste 20-10-1853 Paynehem (dad August)
Emma Ada Caroline 28-04-1856 Kensington (dad August)
Wilhelm August Albert 20-05-1858 Kensington (dad August)
George August Edward  07-07-1860 Norwood (dad August)
Mary Louisa Matilda 31-01-1860 Norwood (dad Carl August)
Herman William Henry 31-071865 Kensington (dad Charles August)
Carl George Friedrich 26-02-1868 Kensington (dad Carl August)
Frederick Alfred 02-02-1870 Kensington (dad August)
Arthur Edwin Rudolf 23-11-1872 Adelaide (dad Carl August)
Ferdinand August Arthur 26-10-1874 Adelaide (dad Carl August)

Mum “Augusta” (only one name) dies 13-04-1876 Adelaide, 45 y, residence Kensington, husband is August GOTTSCHALK.
FYI Her April 1876 hospital admission (also only "Augusta"):  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:3Q9M-CS6D-8SXP-D?i=118 (#523)

Many thanks and very interesting - now I have actual birth dates ..  There is also a child I don't have -
Mary Louisa Matilda 31-01-1860.

Does that mean that George August Edward  (07-07-1860) was born 6 months after Mary Louisa Matilda?  Many babies wouldn't have made it having been born at the 6 month term.

Re the name changes (inclusions/omissions) for August, I am not surprised.  My paternal grandfather was born Eli and for whatever reason at the age of 14 years or so started to call himself Samuel.  He travelled to Australia at the age of 21 years, married my grandmother and the whole family only ever knew him as Samuel.  Its on his marraige certificate, death certificate, etc.  He musn't have had to produce his birth certificate when he married because his birth name was definitely Eli. He never changed his name officially.  I do have a record when he trained as Able Seaman in England where he registered under both names.  His birth and baptism certificates show no middle name.  It proves very interesting.

Oops  a typo!!! Her DOB should be 31-01-1863 (I double checked all the other DOB's and they seem fine).

BTW
The name variations for "Carl August" are not real name changes. It seems to be more of a a feature to use variations of their original baptism name.
Additionally, in other cases where someone was called "Augustus" I have also encountered e.g. "Gus" or "Justus" on BMD certs.

This might be why you missed that one daughter:

A Mary Matilda  Gottschalk (born Adelaide) marries a William Hill (born Adelaide) in 1895 in Victoria. I can see 4 children for them, 3 were born before their marriage!
In 1931 she dies in Armadale VIC when she is 68. Her parents are August GOTTSCHALK and Charlotte (!) GROSSE. (Maybe the informant had confused her mum’s name Caroline Augusta  with her grandmother’s name Charlotte?)

Okay, the birthdate for Mary Louisa Matilda Gottschalk makes sense now.  Thanks for that.  I also understand what you mean by the choice of names they used.  I can see, too where the Grandmother's name (Charlotte) must have been taken instead of the Mary Gottschalk's mother's name.

thanks for your help and for all the valuable information you have provided.

I could provide you a chart of Carl George Friedrich's line as I have it (that is his children, etc) including my Grandfather Cyril Ralph Gottschalk and his wife if it is of any interest to you.
