James Mcadam
« on: Saturday 14 February 09 18:21 GMT (UK) »
Am trying to find info on James Mcadam born 1772 .Parents were William Mcadam and Elizabeth Thomson .I have found Birth/Baptism on Scotland online .He is listed on 1841 census and 1851 census living with sons James and David .He married Elizabeth Mcwilliam who must have predeceased him .Problem is i cannot find a marriage for them or their deaths. 1841 and 1851 census had him living in Girthon.
       Can anyone please help.
                       Judy

Hi Judy

I don't see a will for him on the ScotlandsPeople site and as he was a 'retired cotton manufacturer' on the 1851, I would have expected one.

I'll check the Girthom Monumental Inscriptions later this evening to see if he's listed.

Regards

Hi again

I've checked the MIs and can't see an inscription for him in Girthon.

I have James McAdam in my tree but havent been able to get further back. I think he was a mill worker rather than an owner.
His son David became a grocer and the family ran the business for many years. For some reason they changed the spelling of McAdam to Macadam, perhaps to distinguish themselves from another (related) McAdam family in Gatehouse who were involved with the building of the harbour (Port McAdam).

East Lothian: Anderson

Hi Judy

Have I got the correct family? Your James was living with son David in the 1851 and David is described as a woolllen manufacturer  :-\

Hi Gadget .
Yes i think so, James was married to a Elizabeth Mcwilliam (i presume they were Married) they had at least 2 children James and David ,James was born about 1801 and David 1809 both Girthon .James snr was born 1772 parents William Mcadam and Elizabeth Thomson he was baptized privately at Loudoun .James snr was my 3x greatgrandfathers brother .As was David Mcadam (Port Mcadam) Sounds complicated does it not with all these James and Davids.

Judy,
Callywoods lives in the area and has been involved in historical research beyond census data (which is not always correct!). You might want to contact her personally as she has researched the McAdams/MacAdams - who are in her direct line  :)

I agree,  Scatza  :)

It appears that Caleywoods and Judy are likely to have a common ancestor and the James/David McAdams- MacAdams have become confused.
