PAUL's in Ballymena
« on: Friday 13 February 09 02:12 GMT (UK) »
I am searching for PAUL relatives from Ballymena who can help/compare notes with me. My GG Grandfather John I. PAUL emigrated to Canada in 1852 with a large family. His father- Moses PAUL.  John I. PAUL's wife- Sarah Grace BLAIR.  Any PAULS out there?

Hello.

The current UK INFODISK (Electoral Rolls) lists the following "PAUL" surname
in Ballymena.

Perhaps a letter to each address outling your research to date and what you
hope to find may result in making contact with your distant cousins?.

Good luck.

Mike.

Hi

This is a brief excerpt from a long family history written by one of my relatives in the 1930s.  It may be of help.

All the best
Christopher

Billy's daughter, Nancy Crawford (l8O3 - l809) married James Kernohan,
brother of John Crawford's first wife. She lived all her married life in
Legnagolly, Martinstown, Co. Antrim and died there. Nancy had five children:
Elizabeth, Margaret, Ann, Robert, William.

Ann died young. Robert never married. He died in America.

William married Ann Brown. They had no children and are both dead many years
ago. Elizabeth married John McClintock. They lived at "The Birney Hill" or
near there in the First Broughshane district anyway. Elizabeth died in 1911
aged 84 - born 1827.

The names of her children are:

Nancy, born 1848 married John Montgomery

Margaret McClintock married Archibald Paul (father Moses) in 1st Broughshane Presbyterian Church on 19 August 1897
Moses Paul leased land in Legnagooly Townland, Skerry Parish
It would seem a fair bet to search the 1st Broughshane records for Moses Paul.

P.S.  If you go onto www.familysearch.org and type in Moses Paul you will find a submitted record.  This gives Moses's birth as 1805, father William Paul, mother Elizabeth Agnew, and his death as 1885 in Lisbreen, the next townland to  Legnagooly.  Lookst like your Moses!  RosemaryJoan

Thanks to everyone for their comments. Sorry its taken so long to reply.
Some more family details:
Moses Paul, born c. 1806 in Ballymena, emigrated c. 1839 to Canada with his wife Sarah McCauley (McCullough) and 5 children. Two of the children died at sea and 2 more upon arrival. One son named James Brian Paul born 1836 in Ballymena, survived.  Three more children were born after emigrating: William, Daniel M. and Nancy Agnes.
About 1850, Moses Paul returned to Ireland and brought back, in 1852, his father, MOSES, and Moses (b. 1806) brother John I. Paul with his family: wife Sarah G. BLAIR and children Martha, John, Nancy, William and Moses Blair Paul (my great grandfather born 1851).  So- lots of Moses Pauls in the family.

The father- "old Moses" died not long after his arrival c. 1852- no mention of a wife- so I presume she died back in Ireland. It is THIS Moses Paul born c. 1786 who I am looking for.
There seems to be a  lot of PAUL families (Presbyterian) in the Ballymena, Ballymoney area and I can only presume that they are all related, somehow. Possibly the ones that emigrated to the US are cousins.

Also- Moses Paul's sons: Moses born 1806 and John I. Paul born 1822 suggests that there are many more members of this family. Perhaps Moses (1806) was the oldest and John I.  (1822) the youngest ??
