I know you asked this question a long time ago but I am reading old posts.
couldnt find it in census but found in familysearch his mother was Sarah Mack and he was born  26.8.1865.
better late than never.

never too late.Thanks for replying. Your info is as far as I got. I don't know where he is in 1871. I know he arrived in Australia in the late 1880's, but have no idea where or what he was doing before emigrating
