Jordan Family in Campbeltown
« on: Thursday 12 February 09 13:30 GMT (UK) »
Hi there

I have just traced my GGG Grandfather Joseph Jordan to Campbeltown.  He was born in Belfast in 1809 & was in Scotland by 1851 with his family. He died in 1868 in Campbeltown & occupation is listed as an Inland Revenue Officer (Excise). His son Frederick(master cabinet maker) & family lived in High St Campbeltown & he died in 1871.  MY G Grandfather, Peter Hamilton Jordan was born there in 1871.  I am v excited to have traced all this & just wondering if there are STILL Jordans living in the town.  Is this a popular surname....anyone know?

Hi SiennahB

You should have a look at the various websites that have the UK telephone directories !

Jordan is known in Scotland as surname but I didn't think that it was a commonly occurring surname until I had a wee peek at www.scotlandspeople.co.uk , only to find that there were over 2,400 JORDAN births in Scotland in the last 100 years, 70 of these in the County of Argyll, and 17 of those in the Registration District of Campbeltown  :o  ......

Since he was an officer in Customs & Excise,  there is a good chance of records at The National Archives in Kew on his service, possibly quite extensive, if he left a widow who would possibly have been entitled to a pension.
