I'm also researching my Brock links.

Basically, there are three main threads: those originating from Thurso, those from Norfolk (mine) , and those from Devon/Dorset.

It seems as if yours are the Devon/Dorset lot.

meles
Brock: Alburgh, Norfolk, and after 1850, London; Tooley: Norfolk
Grimmer: Norfolk; Grimson: Norfolk
Harrison: London; Pollock
Dixon: Hampshire; Collins: Middx
Jeary: Norfolk; Davison: Norfolk
Rogers: London; Bartlett: London
Drew: Kent; Alden: Hants
Gamble: Yorkshire; Huntingford: East London

I imagine it's because they spread tuberculosis to cattle, which risks the whole herd.

It's a shame because they are indeed lovely looking creatures.

"Brock" is also an old English word for badger. Hence me using it as my avatar.

And "Meles meles" is the genus classification for a badger.

Hi Obbie
Don't know if someone posted this yet but the 1901 Irish Census returns John Brock b 1837 and Married Anne G. I can trace my family back only to there. I am a direct descendant to John's son George Martin Brock b 1876. The only Irish census still intact are 1901 and 1911 and can be found at National Archives Census of Ireland 1901/1911
