Salt surname in Bethesda area
« on: Tuesday 10 February 09 14:12 GMT (UK) »
I've recently discovered that I have a gg grandmother named Jane Salt, who states in almost all of her census returns that she was born in Bethesda. In the 1881 census she says she was born in Llandegai. I know that there were 2 brothers names Joseph and George Salt who were born in Butterton, Staffordshire who came up to live in Llanllechid and worked as Lead miners, but Jane doesn't fit in with both subsequent families because both brothers name thier daughters Jane Ellen born in 1859. Jane, according to her marriage certificate was 20 years old at the time of her marriage to William Williams of Llanfrothen in 1869, but I suspect that she was younger than this. And her father's name is unknown as well. There is a BMD entry for a Jane Salt in Bangor reg. dist. in Dec 1853, but I've been told by the Bangor office that it cannot be found.
If anyone has come across any Salt information in this area I would be interested to hear from them.
I have recently come across another person with the name of Sarah Ellin (Ellen) Salt, aged 28 and unmarried, born in Birmingham and working as a governess in a flour manufacturer's house at Llandysilio, Menai Bridge in the 1861 census, who might be a candidate to be Jane's mother. Unfortunately I cannot find any Salt families in Caernarvonshire in the 1861 census.

Hi  :)   a belated Welcome to Rootschat :)

Have you tried ordering the birth certificate for Jane Salt directly from the GRO ?

Freebmd has it listed as Dec Q 1853 Bangor vol 11b page 445

Yes I have done that and unfortunately it can't be the right Jane Salt. On that particular birth certificate her father is listed as Joseph Salt and she was born in a pub at Bethesda. There is a Jane Salt dying in 1859 in this district and I'm betting that its her birth certificate I've got. On my Jane Salt's marriage certificate she has not stated her father's name, and consistently throughout all the census thereafter states that she was born before 1853 (and she states she is 20 when she married in 1869). Therefore I am asuming that she was illegitimate, and a candidate to be her mother could be a governess working for a merchantman at Menai Bridge names Sarah Ellen Salt, born at Edgbaston, Birmingham. There is one coincidence between Joseph and Jane in that Jane states in one of the census that she was born at Llandegai, and it turns out that Joseph was living at Llandegai on the 1851 census. But there seems to be a connection between Jane and the Salt brothers Joseph and George (both from Staffordshire) because George and family move to Llanfrothen sometime in the 1860's, and that's where she met my gg grandfather William Lloyd Williams. She names 2 of her children (unfortunately both died as infants) as George and James, James being the father of Joseph and George. I have a theory of what might have happened but I'm going to have to see if there are any other records at the archives to hel[ me prove it.

I don't know if it's of any help but a James Salt married Catherine Gwladys Johns in the parish church at Llanrug on 28/5/1889. She was the daughter of the vicar of Llanrug and James Salt later became the vicar of Llandinorwig. The marriage record notes that James lived in Port Dinorwic (Felinheli today) at the time of his marriage. I'm afraid I didn'r record any other details such as father's name but the marriage register is in the Gwynedd Archives at Caernarfon.

Thanks for the reply. I think he is the son of Joseph Salt. One of Jane Salt's grandaughters was named Gwladys (same spelling) and I realise that it could be a coincidence, but she could have been named after James's wife (or possibily a daughter named Gwladys). It's going to take a lot of research to get to the bottom of this one!
