My 2nd great-grandfather, Samuel Williams, was baptized in the parish of Longdon-upon-Tern in 1808. Prior to 1841 he moved to Staffordshire and according to the various census returns was born, 1851 Longdon, 1861 Long, 1871 Withington and 1881 Wellington. I think there is also a town or village called Longdon-upon-Tern. Looking at a map of the area there seems to be both a Longdon upon tern and a Longdon on Tern. I'm totally confused and wonder whether anyone could give be some guidance as to how I might determine what the likely place of birth might have been.
Samuel's parents, Thomas Williams and Elizabeth Hazledine were married in 1807 in the same church in Longdon-upon-Tern parish. In the 1851 census his place of birth is noted as Erdington and in 1861 Roddington. The most likely candidate for a baptism in the IGI is a Thomas Williams in 1785 at Rodington but I understand there is both a town and parish called Rodington. If anyone is familiar with any of these places I would welcome any similar suggestions about a possible place of birth.
