George Deakins
« on: Monday 09 February 09 20:06 GMT (UK) »
Hi all

I hope you can help me find a marriage record for George Deakins (also in the census as Deacon) he was born in 1782 in Buckland, Surrey and he married a girl called Ann (sorry don't know surname) who was born in 1784 in Beckenham, Kent.

They had 3 children, the eldest two were born in Reigate Thomas in 1806 (or 1808) and Robert who was born in 1811, the youngest James was born in Betchworth in 1821.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Lorraine

I checked the Surrey Marriage Index but unfortunately nothing that fits, only one 1796 in Banstead but to a Catherine.

It may be that they married in Kent?

Hi Kerry

Thanks for looking, it might have been in Kent, or it might not have been at all! alot of our family seemed to have missed the 'getting married' part  ::)

I will go and try in Kent

Many thanks again.

I have found the baptismal record on line for St. Michael Church, Betchworth, Surrey:

Ann Daugr. of Geo. and Ann Deacons (Travellers) Bapd. April 22 (1804)

I believe they were my g-g-g grandparents.

I've looked at an article on "Travellers" which means gypsies/Romani and Deacons/Deakins is a name common among them.

I'd be interested to hear more from you.

Lorraine: Thanks for your very encouraging message!

I would love to have a copy of Ann's christening record: I descend from daughter Ann born 1804 who married George Jordan, they had a daughter Emma who married James Freeman, their daughter was my grandmum on my mother's side, Alice Freeman

I have read up Travellers a bit and the name Deakins was mentioned.  But I would love to know more! Were they true Romani?

I have sent my email address separately so you can send files etc.

Thanks and I look forward to more
