Ayres, Brignell, Cornwell extended family at Lode and Cambridge
« on: Monday 09 February 09 16:36 GMT (UK) »
Any information about these extended families prior to 1900 would be extremely welcome, especially how Jabez Ayres (1836-1891) came to buried in a Star of David grave in Lode churchyard.Despite the number of Jewish names in the tree, most of the family seem to have been Baptists. Also was Philip Cornwell c1798-1888 the son of William Cornwell and Ann Arber

Hi,
William Cornwell and Ann Arber married 3 Nov 1789 at Bottisham but don't appear to have had any children baptised there.
The only Philip I can find was baptised 28 Oct 1792 in Bottisham, son of Edward and Elizabeth (nee Hart).
The Cambridgeshire Family History Society are transcribing Lode parish registers but I don't know when they are available.
Have you come across a Prudence Ayres born about 1695, she was my 7x gt grandmother but her baptism has proved elusive!
Tempsford.

Sounds as though Prudence might have been an older sister of Henry Ayres bapt 1707 at Lode, but I have never encountered her before.

Hi,

The hexagram has a variety of meanings, and on a gravestone is not necessarily a an indication of Jewish faith.  I think it can indicate the sabbath and also the union of opposites, but you might like to check out gravestone symbolism somewhere. In the 18th & 19th centuries every last thing on a gravestone seems to have had a significant meaning.

Many thanks for that Robert, as an amateur archaeologist  I have a variety of sources available to check that out.

If the family were Baptists , it might explain why you can't find Prudence's baptism in the parish records.

Many of my family were Baptists and I have the same problem. I can find marriages before 1837 as they had to get married in the Anglican church ,and  they were usually buried in the village churchyard but there's not many baptisms.

The Cornwells were Baptists and many were buried in the grounds of the Chapel in Lode.  Iam descended from John Day Cornwell.

My Ayres grandparents were certainly Baptists, my great grandfather James Ayres married a Cornwell, they were Aunt and Uncle to Jack Cornwell VC. The Star of David mentioned on Jabez' grave (see above) may be something of a false trail (See also posting Jewish Community in Bottisham?). The entire village was very inter-related, and with repetition of forenames makes the tree very difficult to work out.
