Ninian, if you didn't find your bap at Stockport, try Heaton Norris, St. Thomas.  The baptism is too early for Heaton Norris, Christchurch and I think too early for Heaton Mersey, St. John, but you could certainly give St. Tom's a go.

Have you found other baptisms of the same family at Cheadle?  Somewhere else quite popular with Cheadle folk in this era was St. James, Didsbury - just a step across the river  :)

Hello 'Val's Granddaughter'

MANY THANKS.  Iwas very pleased to get your post cos I haven't found my Elijah Turner - he wasn't baptised in Stockport.  So now I have drawn a blank in Cheadle, Northenden and Stockport and I was quite stumped as to where to look next.

Elijah only appears on 2 censuses (he must, I think, be on the damaged Ashton under Lyne census of 1851 so I haven't got him for '51).  On 1841 he was in Staffordshire and said 'No' to 'Were you born in this country'.  In 1861 he have his place of birth as Cheadle (same as his wife, so perhaps it was an error??).  He married in Northenden in 1832.  I have no info on any siblings, so I haven't got a lot to go on.  He and his sons were millwrights but that doesn't help much.

His wife Ann Ardaren was indeed from Cheadle - she was baptised in Cheadle in 1812, so I've managed to find he parents etc but no a sign of Elijah.

I was working on him being from Cheshire - but now I think about it, he could very easily have come from the Lancashire side of the border.  I've just looked up Heaton Norris ... and it sounds a definate possibility.  I shall try Didsbury too.  Do you know which I should try first? I will try and order the films from the LDS - I s'pose this is the easiest way to find out?   I am hoping to get up to Cheshire/Lancs this summer -  I think the Cheshire parish info is in Chester but do you know where the Heaton Norris/Didsbury parish info is held?

Many thanks.  Regards

Ninian

Hi Ninian,

Both Heaton Norris, St. Tom and Didsbury, St. Jim records are on microfilm at Manchester Central Library (First Floor).  There are plenty of microfilm readers and you don't have to book a place.  You may be better opting to visit the library in Manchester rather than the Cheshire Record Office in Chester (who also have the microfilmed registers of each parish), but they require a booking and you may only be allowed to book in for a limited time, whereas at Manchester Library you can stay all day if you wish until you find your folks!  :)

Hello Vals GD

Many thanks - sounds like good advice.  I shall check out M'cher Library for newspapers too, I have a list of dates I need to check out in the local papers.  It'll save a lot of travelling time if I can get it all in M'cher.

A trip to Manchester is now a definate - though I might try a 'look-up request' as I doubt if I can wait til the summer to find out in Elijah is in St Tom's or Didsbury.
Many thanks again

Ninian .

Ninian,

MCL has a list of the newspapers and registers available of this page. Not all Stockport registers are held by MCL, but I assume Stockport would have have complete coverage.

I have usually been in the evening and it has been quiet, I did look in on a Saturday morning and it like all the film readers were in use.

Regards,
Deryck

Deryck is right - a Saturday morning wouldn't be the best time.  A week day is best.  The library has late closing Monday to Thursday (8pm) and closes at 5pm on Friday and Saturday.

Many thanks again ValsGD and many thanks to Deryck too.

As I'll be travelling up from South Wales I'll have to make the trip of a few days long ..... but by the list of newspapers I ought to go for weeks!!  I will now arrange to go for the beginning of the week to avoid Saturday and early closing on Fri.  The website is very useful - I'll need to to my homework on which papers I will need to look at before I go

Many thanks Ninian

I had a marriage at Cheadle 1851 where the bride's residence was Brinksway.

The Cheshire Tithe map from 1842 has Brinksway on the edge of Cheadle parish in the townships of Cheadle Bulkeley and Cheadle Moseley. It is centered on Cheadle Hulme so you have to drag the map straight down and it is slightly off to the right.

http://maps.cheshire.gov.uk/tithemaps/TwinMaps.aspx?township=EDT_91-2

On the right of Brinksway it becomes Stockport parish
