The Norfolk Chronicle of Saturday 24th September 1796 recounts that "Tuesday last was committed to the Castle by Sir T Beevor, Bart and R. Burroughs Esq Robert Thurston of Hempnall, charged with stealing, at divers times, a large quantity of apples, two dozen glass bottles, about two coombs (a coombe was a twelve stone sack) of oats and other articles the property of Lawson Scarnell.
